Philippa I love your name. Ever since I read Agatha Christie's "A Murder is Announced". One of the characters is Phillippa Hymes. Anyway your misadventure reminded me of something that happened to me. I was on my own but I always found money to go to conventions. I never had money for costumes but I had alot of friends who did like to costume. I had to appear as Data for a panel discussion on the STNG story lines. I am 6'. My friend was 5'8". I looked silly in the costume but no one else had a costume for me. As Data I was supposed to be non emotional. But my friends on the panel had me grimacing because I could not smile. Finaly I broke character, shouted I AM NOT DATA, I AM LORE at the top of my lungs. I burst from the stage and ran out the door. The funny thing was a friend of mine thought quickly and yelled quick, after him. They were all wearing red uniforms. I know this is not UFO related but I thought you might get a kick out of it.

I've got a reputation for it here. One Christmas we had a fancy dress day in
our Supermarket where I work. I more or less like a Moonbase operative. One
customer looked and me and said 'Well you could have made an effort and come
in fancy dress like everyone else.' I wonder what she knows?

If you want to try my advice is...get a costume that when you are in it no
one knows its you...:) Deny everything! :)
