I also like Ford but for some very different reasons. Straker is the commanding presence and alpha male. Except for the episode where he made a mistake and Straker called him on the floor, he is very dependable. He is a follower. He follows orders and makes sure things get done. If it weren't for Ford, Straker and Foster would just be cut outs of each other. Sometimes we have to see someone be fallible or they just come off as a jerk. That is why Matter of Priorities was so good. Straker screwed up and it lost him whatever respect Mary still had for him and the life of his son.

Lake strikes me as the type of woman whom I wouldn't want to work for

think she'd put the job before the person whereas Ellis would

Now having said that, there could have been some potential for Lake
to reveal more of the inner workings as her character developed in
the series. It's just unfortunate that that didn't happen. I think
Lake shows some of her softer side with Straker but I don't think
that counts. To my mind it just means that she fancies him doesn't
necessarily mean she's that way with anyone else.

I was thinking of your "who's your favorite character" question last
night and I realised that I'm quite a fan of Ford also. He may not be
leader material but he strikes me as the man you most want to have
around because he seems to be the one who's always doing whatever
needs to be done. Straker and company might give the orders but
they'd be helpless without Ford carrying out those orders.
