I'd noticed this noise, although I can't figure what it is meant to
be related to, is it a gadget or just a sound effect added for some
reason? At the end of this scene, the camera zooms onto the TV
monitor, with a flat trace on it, which goes crazy and there's
an "electrical hum" to go with it.

I've often pondered on what the point was! The only explanation I
could come up with is Croxley senses what Paul Foster is going to do.

It kind of adds up, given the following scenes in the ruined
house. If Croxley intended to blast Straker and Freeman away, he
could've done so without them even having realized, but didn't.
Maybe his plan was to be killed himself by them, but when he became
aware that Foster was coming to the house, he did all he could to
delay things until he knew he was there. Puts a different perspective
on his last words –"it is time"……………

The following discussion doesn't really fit though. Straker points
out that Croxley must have known, based on the fact they could both
see Foster behind Croxley, implying he allowed himself to be killed
and therefore had control of his own mind (and therefore actions) in
the last few seconds. Could there be a bit of dramatic irony
occurring here? Has anyone else got any explanations that would make
better sense than the nonsense I'm going on about?!!

All this speculation aside, why oh why did the director make Croxley
take so long to die? The camera moves back far too slowly, makes it
silly and spoils what would otherwise have been an excellent
performance by the guest actor (whose name escapes me).

Another bit of trivia - one other "sound" is (I think) of Ed Bishop
throwing away the fake blood container as he goes down to check that
Croxley is dead, you can see him throwing it away. This implies that
it is an entire scene shot from (at least) where we see the blood on
Straker's hand to the end, for him still to be holding it.

I first saw this ep on the "late nite late" screenings and I remember
at the end the presenter saying there was a real panic in the studio
caused by that scene between Foster and Schroeder, because at the
beginning of it they're in another room and can be seen talking but
obviously there's no voices and the crew thought something had gone
wrong with the sound! Fortunately they didn't have a chance
to "interrupt" the screening!

Another kind of "normal transmission will be resumed" occurred when
they showed "Responsibility Seat". In those (good old) days,
commercial breaks were led into and out of with something that
clearly indicated that the programme was about to stop/ restart, in
UFO's case, a still image. After the first commercial break (only
two – remember that???) this image remained for much longer than
usual and when UFO did reappear, it was the scene where Straker is
preparing to leave Freeman in charge, but much of it was lost, which
I realized when it was screened later on Bravo.

The presenter was in fits at the end and explained that there had
been another panic, due to the similarity between the affected scene
and the final scene, they thought they'd muddled the reels (or
whatever) and that the episode would've been extremely short!

Apart from this, I believe "late nite late" must have screened every
episode unedited, judging by the Carlton DVDs which, I`m assuming are
complete. Seems the BBC butchered most of them, from what people
wrote in the archives – a real shame. Pity they didn't put them in a
graveyard slot for the real fans to enjoy like "late nite late" did,
rather than (ab)use them as "fillers" for their unpredictable sports
scheduling.

Cheers for now,
