Sorry - we were at cross-purposes - in your original post you'd
written "(e.g., the gadget in the doctor's office)". Of course
there's a number of scenes in 'a' Doctor's office in this ep!! Did
you mean the scene early on when Croxley is lying down with the
red "light box" thingy above him and sensors on his head? If it is,
I'll watch it to see what you are referring to.

Oh well, it probably means absolutely nothing!! But can you
understand why I mistook this scene as the one you'd meant - that
weird sound heard all the way through their conversation, is
why I'd thought you were referring to this particular scene.

That's what I meant really, the action of him throwing something
away, not that I can actually see the container, it's too dark to be
able to see anything. It's only an "educated guess" on my part, but
I thought a logical one for the action(??) Still, it got us looking
at a UFO ep and that's gotta be good for the soul!!

Another 'nitpick' on the soundtrack of this ep - where Straker
leaves the car on the first visit to Croxley's house, it sounds like
a normal car door closing, not the lovely "whine" normally used for
the gull-wing.

Something else I wanted to mention about ESP - where Croxley reads
Straker's thoughts when he puts the gun to his head - "you're
thinking about your Mother - stop it!" Isn't it actually true that
many soldiers facing imminent death in war were found to think of
their mothers, regardless of race or religion, just before dying?

On a happier note, one other question I meant to ask you Marc, back
in the archives the 4% speedup on PAL recordings is mentioned
several times. In August 1999, you put up some MP3 files comparing
PAL based video soundtrack excerpts of Straker's voice against the
Japanese laser disc recordings which are at the correct speed. Some
people commented they could hear the difference, others not.

Being in the UK, I've always heard PAL and I think the speedup
occurs on the Carlton DVDs, so I'm assuming I've never heard the
soundtrack at the correct speed. On your site you've got some short
excerpts of dialogue; are these from the laserdiscs, or do they also
suffer from the effects of speedup? I'd like to try and "hear" this
difference for myself so was wondering if I could use these bits as
examples of how they should sound?

It might work, although would differences in playback speed from
different sources(i.e. DVD v VCR v laserdisc v PC) possibly cancel
it out, or even make it worse? I recall good old cassette tapes
often sounding very different in terms of pitch, if played on a
machine different to the one on which it was recorded! Incidentally,
does the speedup impact visually as well?

Bye for now,

Sarah
