Well - TV shows do lose main characters from time to time because
they want to do something else! Red Dwarf springs to mind, so does
M*A*S*H.

I don't think it's instructive to compare George Sewell's role in UFO
with Leonard Nimoy's in Star Trek; that part was career-defining to
Nimoy in a way that Alec Freeman simply wasn't to George Sewell.
Although it became something of a cult, UFO was just one of a number
of TV parts he appeared in; he probably didn't expect it to become
particularly successful.
