I think that all the ITC shows on ITV4 have been edited purely for length.
Certainly a couple of episodes have had shortened end credits and there was
a particularly clumsy edit (in an uncontroversial scene) in the first
"Randall and Hopkirk" episode which made a later line sound strange in the
new context.
There were fewer minutes in the hour devoted to adverts when these series
were made and there is now an obsession, on non-BBC channels, with making
sure that programme changes are on the hour or, at worse, half hour.
It's also happening with US shows - the "60 minutes" programme used to be
jokingly known in the business as "48 minutes 30". Now a US show screened on
the BBC without adverts, like Monk or Diagnosis Murder, comfortably fits
into a 45 minute slot.
Sadly it's all part of the growing trend to cheapen the programmes and
patronise the viewers - along with logos, intrusive banners advertising
what's on next and cutting or squeezing credits.
