A lot of people have commented on this in the past. One theory is
that he wasn't feeling well on the day it was recorded, or they
had fed him a huge lunch just prior to recording and he was kind
of sleepy. I know that something was wrong, because I met Ed
months after this was recorded, and his voice sounded fine to
me.

Another thing to consider is that if you are listening to the
A&E (USA release) version of that commentary, it has been slowed
down by 4% to take into account the difference in the episode
speed between the UK and US version of the episode. His
voice does sound a little more lively on the UK version of
the commentary.
