I had always found that amusing, too. If it was so hi-tech, why did the walls need to be so thick? I too wondered how they got a 3 inch thick cutting with the tool they were using. But their rationale for using a hand-operated cutter (I'd have to check the episode) was probably to minimize vibrations, as they thought it might be some sort of explosive device. So at least THAT much makes some sort of sense.

The funny thing about the tube they put that guy in in
"Sound Of Silence"....
It looked like a canister of Aluminum like metal, claimed
very advanced technology by the characters in the room, and
with walls that looked like they were 3 inches thick.
You expected them to be using a powered drilling or hole
cutting device to cut into it....yet what do they use?.... A guy
turning a wood hole cutting tool, by hand, that is only about an
inch deep.
It's funny to watch him pull out that 3 inch deep core cutting
out of the side of the casing, attached to the end of that little
1 inch deep cutting tool.

The tube that the character 'Russ' was sealed into was actually grey, with at least one end (we don't see the other end) a chartreuse color. My reference to photon torpedo tubes resulted from this passage in your earlier post:
"I do recall one piece of fan fiction that had Mr. Spock
in an Enterprise shuttle landing on earth and running afoul of SHADO,
and another in which Straker was sealed into one of those black tubes."
I made the erroneous assumption that BOTH pieces of fan fiction mentioned were crossovers with Star Trek, instead of just one of them.
Sorry for the confusion.

The ones in the episode "The Sound of Silence." Weren't they black?
Alas, I'm at work and can't check my DVD...
