I liked the Mission:Impossible films - they are stylish action films
with lots of eye candy, and that's all they were intended to be. I
don't actually think that they really needed to refer back to the old
'60s TV series; given Tom Cruise's participation they would have worked
just as well, I suspect, in a different guise.

The trouble with films being made by fans is that they will tend to
appeal predominantly to fans, rather than the general public. For a
premise with a huge fanbase that's fine, but for something like UFO,
it's a guarantee that it wouldn't be made in the first place.
