I also tend to prefer the latter ones. They are certainly more
"watchable" after having seen them over and over and over again...

In my UFO Series Guide, I give each episode my own "grade", which
pretty much reveals my favorites and least favorites. The
ones which I gave the best grade ("A") to are:

* CONFLICT
* A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES
* KILL STRAKER!
* SUB-SMASH
* THE CAT WITH TEN LIVES
* DESTRUCTION
* TIMELASH
* MINDBENDER
* THE LONG SLEEP

That's 9 episodes though... I suppose if I were to
narrow it down to 5, it would be:

1. A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES
2. TIMELASH
3. MINDBENDER
4. THE LONG SLEEP
5. THE CAT WITH TEN LIVES
