Thanks for all the responses - I thought the Gym was an underground
level of the 'central park' section of moonbase - the square section
in the middle - of course I don't have any facts to back that up -
just my impression
the stills of the gym do show an interceptor in the background - maybe
it is an 'off line' interceptor in storage or a maintenance bay away
from the launch tubes or it could be the gym was intended to be near
the launch tubes
since I first saw the show in the 70's I always thunk that the pilots
were hanging out in the sphere in the 5 o'clock position & the tubes
lead them out in that direction more - so the tubes would be in that
'southeast' direction - with the interceptors launching away from
moonbase to the 'southeast' or 'east'
discussing it w/ my daughter - she thought it was exactly the opposite
- the pilot sliding in a northwest direction to tubes out in the 10-11
o'clock position & the interceptors launching off due 'east'
of course - I think it is entirely likely that the Anderson crew -
never gave it any thought - that stuff looks cool was always the
primary focus - lots of folks have criticized the un-practical aspects
of many Anderson creations
that it looks cool was always cool enough for me
I wouldn't even be worried about it but I have a partially completed
moonbase model kit by Carlton & I plan to use it in a wargame & want
to model the area around the base including the launch craters - guess
I'll have to guess -
looking at the stills - the area 'northwest' is kinda broken up and
has some hills/craters which could help conceal the launch craters -
the other directions are pretty flat and featureless for a pretty long
distance
