1999 was used by ITV to try and compete in the ratings with Doctor Who, and got thoroughly trounced. Mainly due to the fact that ITV treated ITC shows as filler, and would not network them.

Sorry to be pedantic, but Space 1999 was being conceived and filmed long before Tom Baker was even considered for Doctor Who.

A thousand apologies John, for my incorrect familial references to the
Grade family.
One invariably makes errors when in the middle of a Rant!
its a great British Tradition!!. Micheal should still be ashamed, and
has played on his uncles achievments in the past (to the point where I
really did think it was his Dad!)And he's jumped from so many networks
its dizzying!. He has had more opportunities than most, and is still
beholding to Lew's fabulous heritage; of course its just my oppinion.
I remember in the 70's ITV went crawling
back to Gerry because Tom Bakers Dr Who was doing so well in the
ratings, hence 'Space 1999' was born, so forget Primeval for Gods
sake!, isn't it about time Gerry was approached again?.
A bit of History repeating itself perhaps..
