Isn't this just the problem with viewing something from 40 years ago?
Smoking makes it look dated simply because it genuinely is dated.

Also, you might find some people with a soft spot for the clothes. I
wouldn't be seen dead in them, mind, but give it a few years and who knows
what fashion might come back around? I certainly didn't expect to see flares
receiving another airing!

No criticism, just an observation.
