Well, when people flick the TV on in the evening after a day at
work, they're probably more interested in unwinding and being
diverted than resolutely applying strength of character to the
demanding task of being entertained.

In the case of UFO, it's pretty much a non-argument in your case
anyway, since you're keen to watch as originally intended. In fact
if anything the viewing experience afforded by the DVDs and a
modern TV might be considered inauthentic, from that point of
view.
