maybe this will work,
as the alien's planet died, they went insane and started a automatic mechanised colonization plan, but they realized that they were also dying and couldnt live on other planets. so they copied thier emotional and brain patterns on a scheduled basis, into thier technology, and before they died they became extreemely insane and desperate to get to earth. all they left behind are machines with insane desperate computer programs making ufos with personas, that dont even know that they are long dead 'electronic ghosts', and then, the show's story goes on. but i would also like to consider that there are other aliens involved too, being used and also making interventions on their invasion fleets.
