Okay, this is pretty radicalbut I have heard a lot of unorthodox explanations, I particularly liked the ghosts in the machine scenario) but this is my hypothesis. I have thought long and hard about this and hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes here.
The Aliens are not aliens as such. They appear to be because they are space travellers. They are humanoid and very similar to us. The reason being is they are US. No temporal anomaly here, it is a bit more convoluted than that. I propose that eons ago long before the birth of recorded history, before The Aztecs, The Myans, Greeks and Egytians there was a technocracy of advanced sophistication on Earth. They had developed Interstella flight, had advanced socities and so on. Unfortunately like us they were also warlike, power hungry, and in some ways paranoid. Eventually there was a war, or many skirmishess and battles. Over the centuries those who were left found the destruction they imposed upon themselves had damaged The Earth's environmental harmony and was not compatible for a technological civilisation that could no longer exist in the harshness of the new environment.
Taking what space faring vehicles they could find, a colony ventured out to the stars (or the nearest M class type planet with a yellow sun) and left the inhabitants of Earth to survive on whatever they could utilise.
Now, many millenia later they return to Earth to reclaim it; but they have been so substantially altered by living on another world, a world that can no longer support them, they are now sterile, and in some ways an alien culture. They may have had to radically alter there own bodies at a genetic level due to unknown radiation. Also, they found themselves becoming sterile and held it off as much as there medical and biological sciences could affect.
A race of super homosapiens who have many thousands of years of knowledge (not 700 years as Straker proposes) but sterile and dying. They look to Earth as their own, the humans as a temporay stop to sterility and coporial death and decay. There is no malice or hate, just the undeniable need for SURVIVAL!.

thats a really open ended comment, but it leaves a lot to speculate about. what kind of a civil war would say,a silicate race have? some kind of crystal that absorbed and expelled light instead of gases and chemicals?
competition for ?
two different kinds of life on the same world that could compete and war against each other ,....silicate and mammilian?
ghosts and the living?
one race insane or part of a race insane, and the other not?
and interesting topic to pursue.

Maybe the two types were competing species and the reason that their planet is in such a bad way as to warrant travelling all the way to Earth is a civil war between the two (shades of ST:TOS “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”).
I often wonder how we would handle another sentient technological species living on Earth. Or perhaps the fact that only Homo Sapiens Sapiens remains extant is itself the answer.

now that we got the ball rolling, lets go a little further with it.
we got frankenstiens, burnt brains, green light abducted on the saucer brainwashed suicide bombers, and traitors. the are desperate, they need to come to earth, the broadcast old blind ladies to shadow. they are usually silent, they can work with us if they are stranded on the moon. and they can live in a cat's mind, or brainwash a cat to be like them. their underwater domes are a big hint. i think it is light rather than pressure. they land in shady forrests, light......helium , hydrogen, heat. brightness. photonic bombardment.
anything ive missed?

I propose a different option.
There are those aliens that are Frankenstein creatures made with Earth parts & then ones that possess Earth bodies when they get here.
Perhaps there were too different nations (or even types) of aliens from the same world? First one nation tried & failed; then the other gave it a go?
