interesting discussion you have there :-)
 
As it always is - here's yet another possible scenario...
 
Personally I think that SHADO is dealing with different alien species, as we get aliens behaving differently, in different looking spaceships to boot. Only one species (those with the human bodies and red suits) appears to be outright aggressive and hostile.
 
If one species manages faster than light speed and travels space, it stands to reason that they are not the only ones able to do that in a vast universe.
 
I hold it with Jackson, and think the aggressive ones may have appropriated human bodies (possibly for the same reason a human body was adopted by the spacefarer in Stargate: they are easy to repair and maintain), raid Earth for "spare parts" and use them as a physical existence, as they themselves have turned into beings of pure energy (which sort of explains the sterility as well) without own bodies. Maybe they would like to take over Earth because our planet is teeming with life they could also thus use and have fun with.
 
As to the others, Straker more often than not shoots first and asks afterwards. So it may not be obvious to SHADO that they are dealing with different species, and Earth may have acquired a pretty bad reputation by now.

that fits all the questions and makes logical sense, after all, we know how hard it is to interbreed species, all you get is mules. so them needing us because they are us, from very long ago makes a lot of logical sense.
maybe by combining the anwers here so far we can get a clean streamlined alien origons for a story going.
