maybe this is too ''Dr.whoish'' but what if a race achieved sentience in machines, and just used their bodies and others as drones,....sending them out to simply gain territory?
the desperation about survival would seem out of place with that though. but it might have a minor place in a scenario.

yes. Though not even necessarily subspecies, just different ones. Where there is one (or rather two if you count humans in), why not more? Some of them also just seemed to "be there", instead of outright aggressive, more along the line of just being a bit nosy.

It certainly resolves the question of why they harvest human organs. I like An's idea of several subspecies (if I interpreted it correctly) of Aliens visiting Earth and laying their  plans for domination and supremecy.
