i guess you would have to eliminate everything that we relate to on earth as common ground, and then what you would have left , would be things that are in common with something entirely alien, as a possibility. for example, for thousands of years , Europeans mostly considered themselves to be 'normal' and living in the proper way,....then they met the south seas cannibals. that alone was totally alien to both groups. imagine what the differences from living on another planet would be?

I've wondered as well. In fact, my current story (it's not finished yet!) deals with Earth's other sentient race and how Straker handles meeting one of them. *grin* It's a great plot line to pursue.
