I think the casting choices are going to depend on how close the producers want to stay to the roles of the original characters.

Foster was a thirty something test pilot, recruited to become a command operative. I don't see that role changing. I think Joshua Jackson could have pulled it off. I don't know much about Mike Billington Jr., if he's a good actor, that would be cool!

Straker was originally cast as a desk jockey, but that role morphed into something more substantial. If they intend to keep that aspect of his character, then the actor playing him becomes much more important.

Lake was cast originally, as a scientist, then later as second in command a replacement/alternate for Freeman. Wanda Ventham was born in 1935 which put her in her mid thirties when the series was filmed. Ali Larter would have been around the same age. I think she could pull off Lake.

Of course writing and direction will make or break a film. Look at ST TMP, as compared to ST TWOK. Robert Wise tried to make TMP an epic where Nicholas Meyer, directed TWOK like an episode. We all know which formula worked. :)
