Also in the original, some of the characters were old enough to recall the end of WWII - not so in 2020. I tend to be like Matt and place Straker's age closer to 35-40, Lake a bit younger, and Foster younger still. As I write fanfic that takes place all over the time frames between 1980 and 2011, I have to age them accordingly; by the time I'm writing about Straker in 2011 I have him in his 60's but still in good health and able to run SHADO well.

It's true that female leadership is commonplace now, as is racial integration (thanks heavens!) so these issues won't be necessary to raise in any reboot, but the ethicality of what the aliens are doing to us (i.e. using us as cattle, taking our organs for themselves, perhaps even taking some of our natural resources, etc), can obviously be an issue because in the original, the aliens don't want to communication with us for the most part (except for AQOP). We never do find out if there is a rogue element in the aliens or not - which could be a good point to make in the reboot.
