Hi Pam, and everyone else too,
what we are most like to get from this new version of UFO is just that a New
version. It will be inspired by the original but it will not be the same. The
cast will be different and that will be the first thing that we fans of the
original will notice and probably dislike. The next will be it will be done by
different writers from the original and that might not be a bad thing but
neither will it be good for those wanting a continuation of the original. And
the director will be different so those who loved or hated what Gerry Anderson
did will love or hate it or both.
If we want to know what will happen in the best case senario of doing a
movie of UFO look at the remake of any classic movie say King Kong, True Grit,
The Prisoner of Zenda, or The Three Musketeers. The later being a particularly
good example to use as it has been remade
27 times from the first time the story was filmed and everyone one of the
remakes has been 100 percent different from the original in some way shape or
form. If you want a UFO movie that captures what was in the series you are out
of luck. Just pray that they do not turn it into a spoof.
James K.(fingers crossed)

Subject: [SHADO] Re: UFO Movie casting
Hi Matt and all - have to agree totally with Matt on the issue of casting. One
of the things that comes to mind about the characters in TOUFO (like TOS
designation) is that Straker et al were raised in the Cold War period. Any
reboot of the characters in the year 2020 will mean the lifetime influences on
the characters will be radically different I think. Also in the original, some
of the characters were old enough to recall the end of WWII - not so in 2020. I
tend to be like Matt and place Straker's age closer to 35-40, Lake a bit
younger, and Foster younger still. As I write fanfic that takes place all over
the time frames between 1980 and 2011, I have to age them accordingly; by the
time I'm writing about Straker in 2011 I have him in his 60's but still in good
health and able to run SHADO well.
I don't want to see the Straker character reduced to a "sit behind the desk"
situation in any reboot, as Straker was definitely fully involved in many eps of
the original. Yes, I know Foster was often cast as "action man" in the original,
but Straker was able to hold his own with Foster any time (think of Kill
Straker). It's true that female leadership is commonplace now, as is racial
integration (thanks heavens!) so these issues won't be necessary to raise in any
reboot, but the ethicality of what the aliens are doing to us (i.e. using us as
cattle, taking our organs for themselves, perhaps even taking some of our
natural resources, etc), can obviously be an issue because in the original, the
aliens don't want to communication with us for the most part (except for AQOP).
We never do find out if there is a rogue element in the aliens or not - which
could be a good point to make in the reboot.
Cheers, Pam the Canuck
