Well... count me in the rare minority. I just loved the heck out of "Into Darkness" and I can't wait to see it again with the family. I thought it fired off on all cylinders with great pacing. It was a good blend of "Space Seed" and "Wrath of Kahn". (In fact, I watched "Wrath of Kahn" again once I got home from the movie, and it didn't diminish my initial reaction to "Into Darkness".)

There were actual character arcs in a Star Trek film (which rarely happens). Sure, a character may gain a small bit of wisdom, but essentially they end up back in the same place where they began (the exception being "Wrath of Kahn"). The lack of character arcs is one of my biggest gripes about any of the Trek series. I enjoy "Deep Space Nine" because it's the only one that has any sort of arcs (but those were mostly regulated to Dax, Jake and the Ferengi). "Enterprise" had a few arcs as well.

I'm more of a fan of the genre of science fiction so somehow remakes or reboots aren't going to faze me. I enjoy seeing other people's interpretation of a series (or books, or comics). I suppose that stems from my journalism background: Getting different viewpoints and interpretations on a single event.

I'm really looking forward to what Abrams brings to the table for the Star Wars franchise. I thought Lucas had some good ideas, but overall it grew stale with him directing.

Here's what I understand about what Abrams does: His films and shows are generally about relationships and the interference and obstacles that hinder those relationships. That's the filter I use when I watch something done by Abrams. The rest is just set dressing.
