The vivid blue & red Century 21 logo warns that another UFO episode is about to begin.Fasten your seat belts. A green man with strange eyes (an alien)... a strange man with green eyes (Cmdr Straker)...a silver girl with purple hair...images from a classic television show. Is The Responsibility Seat a story of feminism gone haywire? Ed's dilemma is that he imagines ALL women are like his SHADO girls- honest, capable, logical. Jo Frasier shows him that it aint necessarily so.He is aware of her as a threat to security but thinks that by being open with her she will follow his lead and reciprocate. So he shows her his open heart. But instead of trusting him she plays him for a sap. We see a side of Ed that he has up till now really kept hidden from us. So that this can take place someone else must move into the SHADO hot seat. Alec steps up to the plate, will he make a fist of it,we wonder. But it's not long before he's hitting the bottle. Now I'm getting nervous.Does Alec have a drinking problem? Will he make the right decisions with the 'performance pressure'? Ultimately he cracks and orders the destruction of a 'civilian' target."No,shoot the tyres,Alec!" I yell. Fortunately the resouceful Col Foster is on hand to save the day. Alec and Ed's tag at the end shows the honesty between the two friends, and now each has a greater appreciation of the others position.Ed feels more at home in the responsibility seat, deciding the fate of others from a safe distance, than he does having to deal with the problems of predatory females. But this is Alec's fort'e,he is a people person. Each man returns to his own job with a sigh of relief. On the whole a fine episode with good character development, action sequences,UFO content and all the main characters appearing. The scene of Strakers 'death' on the film set is rather good and hints at his fate emotionally at the hands of the girl.Unlike Capt Scarlet,he IS destructible. I'm not sure what you all will make of this so feel free to comment and criticise please. ChRis |

Alec "hits the bottle" through the whole series! Doesnt he though, and he's good at it,i kinda thought the new responsibilities may have kept him from reaching for it quite so quickly though.Apropos to Alecs drinking,in an earlier episode he suggests to Ed, that maybe drinking requires greater control than abstinence. >> Will he make the right decisions with the 'performance >> pressure'?
