ufo.simplenet.com -- soon only a fond memory...

Marc Martin-2
Hi All,

Lisa pointed out to me an important piece of news for all owners of SimpleNet
websites:

September 7, 2000 - Upgrading Your Account
As you may well know, SimpleNet was acquired by
Yahoo! in July 1999. We are in the process of
converting all SimpleNet Accounts to Yahoo!
Website Services Accounts. SimpleNet Basic
Accounts must be upgraded or cancelled by
January 15, 2001.

What does this mean? First of all, it means that ufo.simplenet.com
(and all other websites with simplenet in their name) is going to
have a name change, since Yahoo doesn't offer these types of names.

Secondly, it means that it's time to start shopping for a new web
hosting provider. Simplenet has been wonderful for the past several
years, providing practically unlimited disk space & traffic for only
$10 per month. However, Yahoo doesn't offer anything like that. The
closest thing they've got for my site is the "Plus Web" package,
which offers 250 MB of disk space & 30 GB of monthly traffic for $40
per month. Since my site currently uses 280 MB of disk space, this
would mean that I would have to remove 30 MB of stuff. Since my site
has about 20 GB of monthly traffic, this doesn't appear to be a
problem. However, since the cost is 4 times higher, doing some
shopping around seems like a good idea...

And this will also affect my frame capture library, which currently stands
at 438 Mb. I'll be looking around for another hosting service, but I'm also
considering the option of reducing what I keep online to just a couple of
episodes of each show, rotating them on a monthly basis. Since the UFO
images are now available on CD-ROM, for those who want them all at once,
and those for the other shows will also be placed on CD in due course,
reducing the amount kept online may be a workable option. That would keep
the disk space down to around 100 Mb; there seem to be quite a few
providers who allow that much space at a reasonable price, but not many
above that level.

Anyway, those of you who browse the frame capture site should be prepared
for some changes by the end of the year -- certainly the URL will change,
possibly the whole site.

In a similar vein, I too have upgraded the TV21 account to the Yahoo site,
complete with yet another new URL. I'll post when it is ready, but it's
going to be: www.tvcentury21.com! I can hardly wait...

Wow! Such loyal customers! :-)

Actually, I think I'll probably stay too... but the disk space
limitation is most certainly going to cause me to scale back / stop
updating my Barry Gray Music of the Week subsection...

And what to call the new site... Hmmm... shadohq.com? ufoseries.com?.

I (and likely many others) also would be glad to know of a WWW space provider
that allows Simplenet-type storage capacity and is in accessible for payment.
I have never had a credit card and I live in England.

Likely there are far more people than merely a few UFO fans to suffer nuisance
because Simplenet's unlimited WWW space allowance seems to have gone down the
flushatory and passed into the realm of things that were. Perhaps if enough
people lean on Yahoo hard enough, Yahoo will continue Simplenet's service as
it was.

Have you considered putting some parts of your site on a free server? At
50megs.com. you can get 50 megs free and to get rid of the banenr ads,
it is something like 5.95 a month. Fortune City offers 100 megs -
supposedly going to 500 soon, but afaik, they don't offer a fee service
to get rid of the ads yet ...........

Aaaaahhhh, and this:
