Hi all,

On my "Videos" page, I've added the complete cover artwork for A&E's
UFO DVD Set 1. Here's a direct link:

I quite like it! Aesthetically it's less pleasing than the
Carlton box set artwork - a bit more cluttered. But that
"ALIENS ARE COLONISING THE EARTH!" line on the Carlton box set
is really dumb.

Hmmmmm.......I've been given another microphone to discuss the box again. :)

I like the artwork - outside and in. I have to thank Marc for the internal
scan as I would never really see it like that since I doubt I'll be removing
the artwork from the holder. I'm disappointed that the episode listing is not
on the outside -- since there will be 2 boxes some lessor fans may only want
certain episodes -- with the current packaging they have no clue which episode
is where. That's too bad and a real shortcoming. Had all 26 episodes been in
one box, then obviously there'd be no problem.

The translucent casing really is crap. Check your "Paul Foster" disc -- in my
case, it looks like the holder part was melting and thus doesn't lineup with
the other discs in the pack. Not a major problem, just aesthetic. Had the
translucent thingie been put into a slip case, I might be able to accept it
more, but on its own, I'm very disappointed.

I can't help but think of how cool it would have been with 4 Amarays in a slip
case (see the A&E Hammer Horror set).

Oh well -- it was not to be.

I do like the color artwork on the DVDs. The menus are decent -- nice color
scheme compared to the S:1999 ones. And there's a *bit* of motion -- look at
the "O" and you'll see a small looped-animation.

I've only checked the photos and Identified extras -- I plan to watch the
episodes in a few weeks -- but Straker does look good with frosty pink
lipstick! I may have to don a blond wig and lipstick whenever I watch the
episodes. ;-)

Seriously though -- was that makeup or just a result of "clean up" of the 35mm
film elements? Or just the lighting? I'm not sure how it shows in the actual
episode, but the "end" clip shows it clearly when they do a close-up on him at
the end.

Yes, in theory a plastic case which holds 4 discs is a good idea.
However, this particular case design is quite bad (difficult to
close, interior pieces tend to come out of place). They probably
should have found a different vendor with a little better product.

Still, it's more practical than those Carlton Digipaks!

Well....
I have seen "horrider" things but I won't say what...
;-1

> YIKES! It's almost like it's unfinished -- stillborn in the design
process.

Maybe it got out too fast to honor promised release shedule?
But it doesn't look that bad on the pics...

> You want to wash your hands after touching it.

Jee! What's this talk about 'washing hands after touching it'?!
This is a family list, fer god's sake!
8-)

Anyway, I don't own many DVDs. Actually, I bought a DVD player (da dear
Apex) so it would play the UFO British ones (didn't want to wait for the US
ones, in case what happened to the tapes happened to the DVDs. Remember? We
could only get 8 episodes on tape over here, in those ancient times...?)

But, hey!

After reading *all* those negative comments over here, I can't help but
wonder what's the problem with you guys?

The extras are no good. So? In the meager lot of DVDs I have, some have no
extras at all!
I guess a series as old as UFO can't have a whole lot of goodies to add when
you lasted a season and went mostly unrecognized afterwards! *I* think they
did okay!

The cases are no good? So? Take the darn disks out and put 'em in those
plastic cases they sell at $1.00 stores! Even better: you can print out your
own covers! 8-)

The episodes are too dull, too fast, too blurry, too fiveoclock shadow, too
whatever? So? Don't watch 'em! Let's go back to the tapes! 8-)
<snicker>

And why not make a good deed today, and give 'em to someone who'll
appreciate 'em?
That's what I do when I buy something I don't like! Heh heh heh!

Jeesh!

--Anny

P.S. I know critism isna necessarily meaning hating, but, hey! UFO is back!
We can watch it on DVD, fer god's sake! Who would have even dared dream
about that even 2 years ago?! 1 year ago?

8-D Rejoice, darn it!

P.P.S. Iz it that time of the month again? Maybe... <snicker>

Re: A&E DVDs

Anthony D
Anny,

Well, I'm over the case thing -- I haven't seen the UK case close up but it
looks a lot nicer than what we got -- though I hear the complaints about it
being "flimsy". Oh well -- can't have everything! The only saving grace for
the US case is that it saves a ton of room. Actually, had it been black
instead of translucent, that might have cut another 50% of the negativity on
my part. :)

It was a first (over) reaction on my part when I finally got a chance to hold
it in my hands.

I think James summed it up fine -- we're expecting a lot from a 30 year old
series on DVD.

As for extras -- I'm middle of the road. My first priority is the episodes in
decent shape, uncut, complete as broadcast. Further down the list is "extras".
Yes, it's neat to include never before seen photos or film clips, etc. but the
first job is to get those episodes out in quality shape.

Anyway -- thought I'd throw in another .02 and try to balance my original post
on the DVDs.

I hope to watch the episodes soon and contribute some decent thoughts on them
for once! :)
