Hi all,
Here's some news from Fanderson's News Page: ---- Overseas, A&E Video have tentatively scheduled additional Gerry Anderson series for Region 1 DVD release over the next two years. The company's second pair of box sets of Space:1999 Year One DVDs (episodes 13 to 24) will be available from July 31st, and Thunderbirds Volumes 3 and 4 will be released in November. Box sets of Space:1999 Year Two episodes are currently planned for release in January (episodes 1 to 12) and June (episodes 13 to 24) 2002 and there are also early plans for a Region 1 DVD release of UFO episodes starting in July next year. Looking ahead to 2003, A&E have tentatively scheduled DVD releases of episodes of Supercar and Fireball XL5 in the first quarter. ---- |
Marc,
in your opinion which would be the better release, region 1 or region 2 DVD. |

I think the Region 2 (Carlton) will likely be the better release, based on what we've already seen with the Region 1 & 2 releases of SPACE:1999 and THUNDERBIRDS. In both cases, the Region 2's have had (slightly) better picture quality, and much better extras and menus. Of course, the Region 2's are going at a slightly faster speed than the original 35mm film, which I only find to be *occasionally* annoying on the new Carlton SPACE:1999 DVDs. Also, my APEX DVD player doesn't really do the best job of converting PAL to NTSC, so for people who have that player, the A&E Region 1 DVD's would look better on their NTSC (American) TV sets. I suspect that the newer PAL/NTSC converter DVD players may be better in this regard, but I don't have any information on that. But I will buying both... perhaps the French ones too, since it looks like they will be released first... and besides, I've never heard UFO dubbed in French before! :-) -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

You should have said something, I've got UFO in french on tape from an old tape trade with someone from Quebec! It was off their last broadcast. Not the same as UFO from France I suspect. >-- >Marc Martin, [hidden email] > > > > >Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/ |

In point of fact, some people process visual images faster than others (Chuck Yeager couldn't watch movies because he could see each frame individually.) My husband can see the voltage flicker in florescent bulbs going bad a good two weeks before anyone else around can (when the flicker slows down enough so I can see it) He can also see scanning fluctuations in crt's. (He can't use my monitor - it's older and flickers more than the one he uses - I can't see it unless my monitor is having a bad day - then I hear it more than see it.) It's not an issue of persistance of vision, it's seeing the changes faster than normal. Also, people who see faster are frequently bothered by digital video artifacts since the digital edge crawl has a larger change factor per frame than analog sources do and so attracts their attention away from the action of the film - like watching the show when there's a strobe going off in one corner of the screen. Deborah R If your TV *is* dual/multi standard, you'll likely get a better picture from PAL DVDs than NTSC ones (625 rather than 525 horiz. lines) although some people swear that they can see a flicker on PAL discs as this works at 50 frames/sec rather than NTSC's 60. I believe that last bit is simply wrong (persistance of vision etc, but it's possible that US TV's use a phospher in the actual CRT that has a shorter persistance than PAL TV's. Just curious as to why A&E would alter the editions at all from the UK/Region
2 counterparts? Why not leave them as they were, and simply release identical materials? Does anyone have more information? Ken |

Well for some reason the folks who make the Carlton discs & the folks who make the A&E discs are not sharing their extras, menus, etc with each other. To me, this seems incredibly dumb, but all you have to do is join the ITC_DVD mailing list to discover that these 2 groups of people seem to want to have nothing to do with each other -- they seem more interested in their egos than doing something that might produce a better product for both the USA and the UK. So as a result, the fans suffer... :-( -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

(just curious) - is it so that you don't miss out on all possible extras, or is it more of a 'collector's mentality' kind of thing? A need to have a complete collection of all the official releases? Gee, Marc
Is it standard practice for compeating companies to share info especially when they are selling the same product. Has Boeing ever shared with another aircraft company they were compeating with? But your right its the poor fan who is going to lose out not the companies. They will find some way to make a profit. James K. |

No, but *supposedly* they are not competing -- Carlton is selling to the UK, and A&E is selling to the USA. However, they do *behave* like they're competing... -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

Funnily enough competing companies do share information on occasion - I know that the investment banks in London held an IT conference so that they could share ideas a few years ago. The idea was that by sharing these ideas, everybody could help to bring down their IT costs - so everyone would benefit. Obviously no-one is going to share business strategies or information that they think is going to give them an edge over the competition, but in the case of the two DVD releases, especially since they are aimed at different markets, they could only have helped each other out really. |

Hi all,
Have you noticed a lack of messages in the last day? It would appear that either the train fire in Baltimore, or the Chinese "worm" virus has caused some widespread problems with the Internet. For example, I am unable to send e-mail to any Yahoo Group, however, I am able to post this message by going to the website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO So, just in case you were wondering, no... it's not the Aliens at fault here.... strange things on yahoo
as you already know Marc, from about 5 months ago I can read and post messages on SHADO-yahoo absolutely only by WEB...never more receive by e-mail...occasionally also I can't post by web because the my mail "are bounced"... -- Angelo Finamore -- --- In SHADO@y..., "Marc Martin" <marc@u...> wrote: > Hi all, > > Have you noticed a lack of messages in the last day? But I posted a question to a few AVENGERS groups at yahoo! and there is hardly any response in the other groups too. Same goes to the ITC groups. They all seem to be deserted (except the AVENGERS group at A&E, they flooded me with e- mails, but that's not at yahoo!) Maybe they are all on holiday? > So, just in case you were wondering, no... it's not the > Aliens at fault here.... (or is it?) Are you sure, EARRRTHMAANNNN? :-) CU Christian |

Hi all,
There is definately something wrong at Yahoo. I wasn't getting any messages from the group and decided to check the group website by entering the search Shado groups which was how I found the group in the first place. But this time I was told no were no matches to my search. So is not right. Marc, it's time to check it out. "G*?D&*M dirty Aliens" in a Chuck Heston voice. James K. |

I suspect so too! Since the first dubbing was made over here, and knowing how La douce France feels about anything not translated and dubbed there, it must be quite different! I wonder how they'll sound like, though... I think they did quite a good job at the time! If Phil can't <cough> some eps for you, Marc, let me know: I may be able to do something! --Anny :-) |
