4 ****'s!
This is one of the best of the series, and I remember well how this episode changed me from a Foster fan to a Straker fan for life! Bishop really shone in this one, the scene in his office on the phone to the hospital so incredible that it chokes me up STILL after over 20 viewings!!! Barnaby Shaw was a good choice for Straker's son. I believe it was you, Marc, who gave us the background on him. Weren't you the one who told us he was Maxwell Shaw's (Dr. Schroeder) son? And those wonderful tidbits of Straker playing with John give so much depth to his character. Wow! My newest story was heavily influenced by this part of the episode, since I have a great scene in the first act where Straker is playing with his children. Anny can attest that it's really cute. (Won't you, Anny?) As someone mentioned, we females love that boyishness in a guy. Last year we got into the Great Debate over the character of Mary, so this year I'll just say that I never thought she was the type of woman to appeal to his type of guy and leave it at that. (Maybe Gerry Anderson's, but not Straker's.) For my idea of the type of woman his character would prefer, see any of my stories. *grin* (Sorry, I couldn't resist!) However, I do appreciate Suzanne's portrayal. She did the best work possible with such a dippy character and actually managed to give her some dignity, in spite of sappy lines and so forth. I absolutely love the tension between Straker and Alec in this episode! It's clear that his friend knows that something is wrong, but he just doesn't know what. It really goes a long way to show their friendship. Especially in Straker's implied trust in Alec's decision when he doesn't re-divert the transport back to the hospital. Really cool. I've used elements from this episode a lot throughout my series of UFO stories (most noticably in #16), partly because there's just so much going on to draw from and partly because this was such a key moment in Straker's life that to omit it would be stupid. But I honestly don't think any other episode in the series packed quite so much personal drama into its 50 minutes. Big question izzzzzzzzzz.... Wherezdarest!? <Piranha mode on> >As someone > mentioned, we females love that boyishness in a guy. :-D > Last year we got into the Great Debate over the character of Mary, so this Well... One thing is sure: he loved her. And, at first, she did love him, too... Well, even after that... When they meet at her house... Those looks between 'em before the bearded guy appears... There was still something going on between those two! <wise nod> > year I'll just say that I never thought she was the type of woman to appeal > to his type of guy and leave it at that. Yep. We may call her the screecher creature, but, hey! She's a real good screecher creature! :-1 AQOP is one of my fav episodes still, and when I saw it again after nearly 20 years, it was as if it had only been a couple of months... The thing made quite an impression. <slow nods> --Anny |

So, if I can persuade you to be just a little more patient, I may be sending you another tidbit soon. >AQOP is one of my fav episodes still, and when I saw it again after nearly >20 years, it was as if it had only been a couple of months... Since none of my family will come near when I'm watching UFO (they think it's dippy!), it's nice to know what you guys are thinking as you watch it. Almost like having you there with me in the room! *grin* BTW, my parents were over yesterday and asked to sit and watch an episode with me. I almost fell out of my chair! We watched "Kill Straker!" because neither of them remembered it and they remembered "Subsmash." We had a great time, and my children even kept quiet through it! Amazing. Patient? What's that?! <mumble grumble> Tidbit is the right word. <pout> > It always does my heart good to hear the feedback from you guys. Since none > of my family will come near when I'm watching UFO (they think it's dippy!), Well, it's about the same here... But my mother (who's 81) always watched *that* one when "Alerte dans l'espace" (UFO) was on on Canal D (they showed all the eps two or three times) and she always would ask questions about plot points... I think she liked that one and Confetti check, because they have less to do with aliens, at first sight, and my mum isn't into Sci-Fi at all! > it's nice to know what you guys are thinking as you watch it.
