Hi all,
I've noticed something peculiar with Angelo's new ART OF UFO website: http://www.ufotv.it/ART.htm When I use my wife's PC, I can access this site just fine, and view the pages just fine. However, when I use my own Macintosh, I can't view any image on the entire site. In fact, many pages give a "404" error (page not found) even though the pages can be viewed on my wife's PC! I've tried this on 4 different browsers on my Mac, and it doesn't work on any of them. This is quite strange, because I can access Angelo's UFO Merchandise page (which is on the same server) just fine. I looked at the source code of one of his new pages and found the following line of HTML source code: <META NAME="Template" CONTENT="C:\PROGRAMMI\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\html.dot"> I'm wondering perhaps if this website requires you to have a Windows PC with Microsoft Office on it to view it?? That's weird. I wouldn't think so, though - it looks like he creates the pages in Office using a template called html.dot, although, why that would insert itself in the source code, I don't know. <ponder> I write my pages with MS Word and Wordpad and it doesn't do that ... I don't think. <looking> No, doesn't. Yes, I've looked at the source and he uses Word 97, but I just went to the url and I get NOTHING. Nope, absolutely NOTHING shows up. Well, not with Netscape - let me try IE ...... Okaaaaaaaaaaay, it shows up with IE, although IE tells me that in order to view that page properly, it needs to download a bunch of crap which I told it to NEVER do. The img src tags have an underscore as the first letter of the filename.
Don't know if this is a reserved windows character or something. I'm going to try it on a Mac now. Without even looking at his page - he's used Office to create his page and
it's created a MS proprietary one - using HTML tags that can not properly be rendered without using components of Office. I'm using Opera 6 but have office installed so it rendered - also in his code, he's using frames without inserting anything inside the noframes option - if you can't render the frames, it's a blank page. Somebody send him a copy of Dreamweaver - please <VBG> Deborah -----Original Message----- From: Yuchtar [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 9:18 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] ART OF UFO - Viewing Problems? Hmmm - well, I didn't check every page, but didn't get any 404s or blank pages. Everything I tried seemed to do what it was supposed to - and I don't have any Microsoft software whatever on my PC. No Windows, no Office. |

Hi All and thanks for all the messages about topic "ART OF UFO -
Viewing Problems?". Just I'm in the research to find out all the problems of connections. Also I want to say again that in anycase the site is still "Under Construction" as you can find more pages not active. This is the case of more pages not active with 404 error in the Costumes Section, but the rest of the site is active. Also in the Costumes Section there are pages active but without pictures because under construction. The Sections: Main Title, SHADO Earth, SHADO Sea, SHADO Air, SHADO Air-Space, SHADO Space, Not of SHADO, Unidentified, UFO logos, Ending Title, are all Sections active and with pictures. The Sections: Credits, Cast, Episode Order, are all Sections active and without pictures. The Section Costumes (the more hard and long to construct), have many pages active with or without pictures, and many pages still not exist . The Sections: Make Up and UFO in the Art are still Under Construction. Thanks for attention. -- Angelo Finamore -- |

On one of my Mac browsers, I was getting 404 error messages (in Italian!) on pages which were viewable on other browsers! But it was quite strange, as each browser I tried had a different problem... one wouldn't display anything from the site at all, another displayed the text and not the pictures, another one gave 404 error messages, etc.! Actually, now that I think about it, the one which was displaying text and not pictures might have been doing that because of the advertising/pop-up menu elimination settings on that browser... better turn that off and see what happens... Marc P.S. So Dreamweaver is the web building application of choice? That's good to know, since one of these days I'll be upgrading my ancient (1997 vintage!) computer... |

Winword can automatically create webpages for you, you just save it as a
webpage (assuming you have the appropriate module installed). HOWEVER - the html Winword creates is full of proprietary Office-related code and XML code (HTML is a subset of XML and not all browsers can render it properly). Luckily, most browsers ignore the code they don't understand, but the effect can be positively bizarre. One of the issues here is the frames. There is no content in the noframes section, leaving a blank page - not a 404, just nothing. So if your browser decides not to load the frames or the browser is set not to render them at all, you're sunk. Netscape will also not load tables that are not properly configured and the older versions can't handle multiply nested tables at all well. Netscape will also not render pages that use a cascading style sheet if it can't locate the style sheet. These are not bugs - this is simply how it works - NSN demanded correct code and didn't 'guess' what the code should be so it could render a page whose code was bad. (That's why there are so many MSIE only pages out there - bad code that MSIE will 'fix' so it will render, but other browsers won't 'fix'. Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG html coding program, very highly rated. Personally, I use Texturizer as my editor, have MSIE5 and Opera 6 as browsers and have finally gotten Apache properly configured for my web test-bed. Contact me off list and we'll talk about Opera. Dreamweaver is highly rated, but the pro builders are moving to XHTML and
XML, and I'm not sure there will be a WYSIWYG tool for that. -----Original Message----- From: Marc Martin [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 4:39 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: RE: [SHADO] Re: ART OF UFO - Viewing Problems? But those are basically for database and data transfer. I really don't think
ufoseries.com needs to be converted to XML - though I could be wrong. :) 1999 Lives, Anthony ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Rorabaugh" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2002 11:31 AM Subject: RE: [SHADO] Re: ART OF UFO - Viewing Problems? > Dreamweaver is highly rated, but the pro builders are moving to XHTML and > XML, and I'm not sure there will be a WYSIWYG tool for that. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Marc Martin [mailto:[hidden email]] > Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 4:39 PM > To: [hidden email] > Subject: RE: [SHADO] Re: ART OF UFO - Viewing Problems? > > > P.S. We are getting seriously off topic here but -
XHTML is the latest standard for HTML, separating content from presentation using style sheets. XML is a step beyond, complete separation of content from presentation and addition of completely customizable presentation. Winword's formatting is basically XML. While I certainly don't see any reason for Marc to move ufoseries.com to XHTML or XML, the shadolibrary.org is already in XHTML and completely validates to the W3C specifications.
