Alec Freeman...

I beg to differ with the criticism of Alec Freeman. In "A Question Of
Priorities', he seemed to be handling the search for the downed UFO
by the book. also, in "The resposibility Seat", he showed his mettle
by being willing to shoot to destroy the Sovatec
mobile. Will

I don't see Alec Freeman as being a bad commander - just different than
Straker. He takes a more "gut" reaction to his duties, and depends less on
cold hard logic and computers - he's a people person in alot of ways. I see
Alec Freeman as more of a Horatio Caine (CSI: Miami) to Straker's Gil
Grissom (CSI).

Dear Pam, Thanks for The insight on alec Freeman. Did you know that the reason for George Sewell's departure from UFO was that, according to Sylvia Anderson, the American audiences didn't consider him as "pretty enough"? My late mother would have decidedly begged to differ with that appraisal; she had a true crush on him. *LOL* I wonder why the series didn't explore Straker's secretly-held hatred of the Aliens in greater depth. Such a contempt is understandable in light of the strafing attack upon the limo. Hmmmm...... William

Re: Alec Freeman...

Dear William:

I felt George Sewell's portrayal of Alec to be very charming and in my mind,
looks are not the only reason for hiring an actor. Of course, in North
America, looks seem to be more important - hence the cookie cutter blonde
bimbo females on TV and the socalled square jawed males (a la George Eads on
CSI) who are considered ideally handsome - but not in my view. I think
actors like George Sewell and others exude a charm in their roles that far
outweighs the looks business.

Straker's alien-hatred is understandable but I also think his hatred is
double edged - not only did the aliens almost kill him, and are continuing
to raid his home planet, but the very need for SHADO's creation destroyed
his marriage and his son.

<< I felt George Sewell's portrayal of Alec to be very charming and in my mind, >>

I agree with you Pam. Alec was and is my fav character.

<< looks are not the only reason for hiring an actor. Of course, in North America, looks seem to

Too true.

<< - hence the cookie cutter blonde bimbo females on TV and the socalled square jawed males >>

Again too true. What ever the hair colour, I've seen too many male and female bimbo's on tv over
the yrs. More now then ever..

<< (a la George Eads on CSI) >>

Just started watching csi on spike. Who does he play again?? He's not Grisson. Not the cute black
guy.. Hmm. Think I know which one. just not his name.

<< who are considered ideally handsome - but not in my view. I think actors like George Sewell and

Again I agree. It was Alec's charm and personality that won me over. And he is handsome in that
soft rougen way..

You can keep most of them pretty boys.

I can understand why he hates the aliens. But he had only himself to blame for loosing his with
and he could have saved his son.

April.

Re: Alec Freeman...

Hi April:

Alec's charm comes definitely more from George's considerable personality
shining through than looks, but I've never been about looks as far as men go
- they have to give me something else to latch onto than looks - and looks
fade as we age too - charm lasts forever! George also has a lovely smile and
nice teeth!

On CSI, George Eads plays Nick Stokes - I too prefer the actor who plays the
black CSI (momentary brain fart prevents my mentioning the character's
name....). Grissom has been compared to Spock on the original Trek for his
lack of emotion and the fact one of his co-CSIs is in love with him -
unrequited of course.

Do you recall the actor from Falcon Crest - David Selby? I think Selby was
alot like G. Sewell in that he wasn't classically handsome by H'wood
standards but he exuded charm and was the kind of guy you'd like to have
dinner with (or maybe more????)

Yes, it's possible Straker should blame himself for the loss of his family -
most esp his son - but I doubt if he sees it that way - I'm sure he chalks
that loss up to the aliens as well.

Ciao for now - Pam

If I'm not mistaken, David Selby was also Quentin Collins on "Dark Shadows" before ('way before!) Falcon Crest.
