Amnesia
In some episodes of UFO we'd see victims being given an injection that would wipe all memory of their encounter with the aliens and shado. I used to think, awe no. Especially if some of the characters had been nice and formed a relationship with shado personnel. I would feel so sad. Part of it had to do with my own growing up and my own experiences of being retched away from the people I loved and longed to stay with. It just goes to show how emotive some of the stories in UFO can be. Just thinking about it still brings a twinge of sadness back. Is there a Doctor in the House? No I don't like Needles! |
Memory is a strange and wonderful thing.
In 1996 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I'll save you all the nauseous details, but I have only in the last year or so recovered to about 95% of what/who I was before it happened. Many people who knew me before say I am a different person now... Don't know if I am a better person... Hope so... Anyway, most - if not all - of 1997/8 is as if it never happened to me. I write a daily journal and the entries for that time are as though someone else wrote it. Although I was very ill, the entries are nonetheless lucid and logical, and yet I have absolutely no memory of it at all now (just as well). Although I remember some of the doctors and nurses from 1996 (when I first went in), Ihave no memory of the people that helped me in 1997/8 even though, they tell me we conversed. Many times I met people who seemed to know me very well, bought me back to life, and yet embarrassingly, I could not recall them at all... A confusing and horrible experience. The voice therapist that helped me regain my speech for 2 years is just a name to me, and although we are friends now, Ihave no recollection of her helping me at all. My neurosurgeon tells me that (simplistically) when the brain is injured (for whatever reason) all its functions go into survival mode. We have many types of memory (much like a computer - short-term, long-term, visual, sound and touch). Anyway, during my recovery my brain was prioritising its function and I was surviving on short-term memory only (while my brain was busy repairing itself by making a whole new series of connections) and making a whole new me, and instead of filing, my memories were over-flowing to nowhere like water overflowing from a bathtub, even though I was completely unaware of it. The brain is clever enough for me to have noticed (as it's not a linear process) by associative. Anyway, I'm okay now. It's been a long haul and painful story, although apparently not as long for me as it has been for my girlfriend and family. Back to UFO... maybe one way the Amnesia drug could work is to in some way delete all associated memories... It's programmable/selective? Not long enough for meaningful relationships to be formed - but long enough for the sort of relationship where it might come in very handy ;) Interestingly, in one of the UFO novels by Robert Miall, it's implied that the amnesia drug works over a period of months or years, but this is not supported by the actual series (and it wouldn't be very practical for the recipient!) > Is there a Doctor in the House? I always thought that, since it erases the last X hours (don't remember
how many hours it was they said), it effectively wiped the short term memory before it was committed to long term. Hello there Griff,
Your personal experience certainly added another dimension to my thoughts of those who were given the amnesia drug in UFO and helped me imagine how the characters might think and feel. I'm sure you are a very special to all those who know you. You're very brave and I wish you, your family and girlfriend all the very best for the future. Regards, Christopher |

Hello James,
I like to thank people for responding to my messages just so they don't think I'm being rude. You'll have to forgive me as most of what I remember so far of the episodes of UFO is being recalled from my long term memory at the moment. And as I understand it most of our recall has gaps which we fill in. I won't go into that too much. For the moment I remember some if not all of the episodes of UFO and am just beginning to rediscover them again. So I hope people will be patient with me if I get some things wrong. Yes I love coffee :D Regards, Christopher --- In [hidden email], James Gibbon <james.gibbon@v...> wrote: On Mon, 24 May 2004 15:20:19 -0000 "chaucerchris" <chris@c...> wrote: In some episodes of UFO we'd see victims being given an injection that would wipe all memory of their encounter with the aliens and shado. Hi All,
I was just checking some UFO character details and I found this when checking up on Gabrielle Drake: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0236907/ Does anyone know about number 13 dated release 1974? I presume this is a mistake. I am not aware of any production in 1974. I presume it was an Italian UFO release of some kind... Best, Griff |
Yes Griff, you're right.
It's an Italian release. In those years some movies were made out from UFO episodes by putting together some sequences coming from the various episodes. Have a look at the http://www.isoshado.org/eng.htm website and click on the link "UFO from TV to Cinema". teresa ISOSHADO ----- Original Message ----- > Hi All, > I was just checking some UFO character details and I found this when checking up > on Gabrielle Drake: > > http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0236907/ > > Does anyone know about number 13 dated release 1974? Hello Teresa :)
Of course. I did hear of this, but I thought it was released in the late 1980's, along with the "Invasion: UFO" VHS video release in the UK. I had no idea it was released in 1974! Thanks so much for clearing this up for me. Marc has some info on his UFO series site: http://ufoseries.com/videos/index.html It's about 3/4 the way down that page under "Out of print". HTH -- Rob |

Griff,
Wow, what an incredible story. Fascinating stuff, especially when heard from a first hand account. But they're right...When the brain suffers trauma, it does shut down and "data" is lost because it's just not as important as other functions. Some of the horrendous hockey hits you see when players hit the ice with their heads, they don't remember the hit, the game, or even arriving at the stadium, suiting up or playing that night. You know, I should be more thankful for what I have and for my health (not that it's great, should lose 20 pounds)...and for my wonderful wife and 4 y/o boy. Wow, a brain tumor....My hat is off to you, Griff. Congrats on your recovery!! ===== Click to subscribe to Don_Ellis __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Thanks :)
I know I probably shouldn't have aired my trials and tribulations here (although a lot of very positive things have happened to me as a direct consequence),but I thought in the context of 'Amnesia' I thought it might be of interest to some.
