Whatever it is, it's not 'aerodynamic ground effect', since I doubt those things fly by aerodynamic lift. More likely just turbulence from air disturbed by the spinning ship, or possibly some other effect directly from the drive.
I love this guy's work! But the humans sure take their time reacting to any threat, no wonder they're always getting blown up!
