Anyone made an alien spacesuit?

Anthony Appleyard
Have you heard of anyone trying or planning to make a reproduction
studio prop ailen spacesuit like in the Gerry Anderson UFO series? (I
read somewhere that the red cloth was lycra.)
(I have made a Poser CGI model of a UFO series alien, see
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FAB-CGI/.)

Anthony,
Actually this is on my list of things to do. I am currently prototyping
a lot of reproductions for UFO, Space 1999, Search and The Invaders
items in Lightwave. I will be working with a machine shop on fabrication
of the prop pieces. The suits and fabric props will be done by my wife
and I. I had not started investigation of the materials for the
spacesuit yet, so if you nail down any info I would appreciate a post to
this list so we can compare notes.

Thanks,
Martin

I'd love to see all this. I love replica props. For further info and help in construction, I recommend http://rpf.prop-planet.com

When is the project likely to be finished?
It would look more realistic if the spacesuit had the backpack.

I think Paolo Malaguti has an original UFO series alien helmet.
Perhaps he will let you examine and measure it.

Unfortunately, I don't expect the UFO items to be done any time soon. I
am currently working 14 hours a day and when I get any spare time, I am
working on the Search and 'The Invaders' items since they are the
easiest to complete. Then on to the more difficult projects.

I may have mentioned this before but I saw Gay Ellis's command console from
Moonbase used on an eps of the Muppets back in the 1970's - both shows were
from ITC so I suppose the set piece was sitting around in some warehouse
available for use. I think the piece was used when the Muppets hosted the
Carpenters and Karen sang "Calling Occupants..."

I am currently watching the currently released DVD of Timeslip. In
the stories "Time Of The Icebox" and I think "Year Of The Burnup"
some of the electronic consoles from Moonbase are used. In the end
credits 21st Century Props are mentioned as the suppliers.

Was it just me or was there a Barbara Streisand musical special recorded in
the early seventies which featured the Moonbase console?

Dave.

Century 21 sold or leased a lot of props out to others. It made good
economic sense at the time, and they would never suspect their ingenuity
would be remarked upon worldwide some 35 years after UFO.

Props from the series can be seen in such diverse productions as Dr Who
through to truly dreadful adult movies of the day.

Myself, I actually had a colouring book marketed by Century 21. Tony and
Tina at a fairground; no connection at all to Anderson's future visions other
than the company name itself.

Dave.

No, a British ITV children's serial from 1970-71. If you wish to
learn more of it then this is the oficial website

http://www.timeslip.org.uk/index2.php

I've also remembered watching a Children's Film Foundation film from
the 70's called Kadoing in which an alien is found by children and
he is using one of UFO's Alien spacesuits. Only when he takes the
helmet off a stalk growing on his head pops up with a "Kadoing"
noise. Can't remember the plot...

Also, you might like to take a butchers at the (in)famous:

http://tv.cream.org/

Which has many Brit noistalgic media/telly gems, including all the Anderson
series, naturally.

So obviously building on the more challenging second season of UFO there
then :-)

Dave.

Was this Kadoing made while the Gerry Anderson UFO series was being
made? Or afterwards? If afterwards, perhaps the alien spacesuit and
helmet used are still somewhere in the BBC props store, or old unused
junk store (which some people call an "elephants' graveyard"). Or is
the helmet from that suit the helmet which the Italian still has?

KADOYNG was an English one hour TV movie from 1972 made by the
Children's Film Foundation who "regulary produced moderately budgeted
juvenile SF films. In doing this the normally conservative
organization showed itself well in advance of Hollywood's film moguls
in its realization that children would be the target audience for
Science Fiction.
One of the Foundation's best efforts, this gentle comedy features a
trio of children who find an alien (played by Leo Maguire who wrote
the screenplay also) from a planet of 'brainy people', only he's not
quite so brainy. Accordingly, their joint efforts at stopping a
planned motorway, though finally successful, are not without their
difficulties. The scene where the children's family politely don't
question Maguire's odd appearance (he has a pair of antennae) is
charming."
(from "Science Fiction - The Aurum Film Encyclopedia")

I've got a rather rare picture from this seldom seen movie (I for
myself saw it only once in 1972); I'll post it into the files section.

Dear Marc - I think I discovered your site about 5yrs ago! I have enjoyed it
immensely and to tell you the truth - your site was instrumental in getting
me back into writing fan fiction. Thanks also to Deborah Rorabaugh (SHADO
librarian) for accepting my work!
