Is it me, or have all the Gerry Anderson related discussion groups
become rather quiet lately? Is everyone sick? Watching the Olympics? Tired of the Internet? I guess I'll take this lull to reply to a comment Rob made a few weeks ago. In the documentary "Mr. Thunderbirds", Gerry Anderson made statements that blamed ITC New York for the cancelled 2nd season of UFO. This would seem to contradict some of the rest of us, who have blamed financier Lew Grade. However, Gerry's statements still don't change my mind, because when he was talking about ITC New York, he was referring to a time in the spring of 1973. This was 2 and a half YEARS after UFO completed filming in the fall of 1970! When I think about UFO's second season being cancelled, I typically think of activities which occurred in 1970 and 1971, not 1973. And around that time, Lew Grade stopped production of UFO and told Gerry Anderson to go film another live action series called "The Protectors". So I still blame Lew Grade, and not ITC New York. Also, by the time spring 1973 had come around, many of the actors were already busy doing other things, the special effects crew from Century 21 were doing other things, and Gerry Anderson was planning on making sweeping changes to UFO, including moving it 19 years into the future and having SHADO HQ on the moon! So again, this doesn't really sound like a second season of UFO to me... more like a new series altogether, which is what it actually became... On a different subject -- with only a week to go, it looks like my business trip is definitely going to happen such that I will be at Fanderson's Century 21 convention on Saturday! It's a pity I didn't reserve a nice single room in advance at the convention hotel, but hopefully the walk from the nearby Coventry Hill Hotel won't be too unpleasant... Unfortunately FAB-L is broken, which doesn't
help. Some non UFO things are getting posted here, but I can't help feeling there might be more discussion if FAB-L were fixed. Now I am here, the (UK) Channel 5 documentary (not to be confused with channel 5 videos) had some interesting footage of the UFOs which carried on to show parts of the set and some discussion about how they were made. I didn't see anyone on the list mention this, perhaps I missed it or this footage is known. And on yet another topic, I am surprised that there isn't enough for a UFO cutaway book. There are MANY vehicles, the studio, moonbase, the space suits, weapons and so forth. The main difference I think is UFO does not have the history of cutaways that things like Thunderbirds had in TV21. Peter Hemingway |

Has anybody worked on the possibility of coming up
with the Shado HQ Technical manual and blueprints. Hehehe. Things like. Aliens are know to carry high powered weapons of unknown technology. However, they shoot regular bullets. Look like 22 calibre. UFO's break up after 24hrs in the Earth'a atmosphere. Why? We don't know. They just DO! So there! Hehehe. Could be a lot of fun. But seriously. The SHADO tech and procedure manual could be a really fun project. ****** Here is another of Ron's annoying questions. If there really was a base on the moon. Why wouldn't half a million amature astronomers find it when looking through telescopes from Earth at the moon? This goes a long with the other faux-pas about SHADO being top secret but yet they have logos all over everything. At least in Space 1999 Moonbase Alpha was a publically know facility. In the Dalotek affair, the crew from the Dalotek base were allowed to know that there was a military base on the moon, in fact if I remember correctly they even had a visit. And of course we know that there were non-military organisations like Dalotek, and the Russians from 'The Responsibility Seat' with bases on the moon, so I guess it's not really a big deal provided the secrecy regarding moonbase's actual purpose isn't compromised.
