It was really hard for a fan of UFO to collect stuff from the show
when it first aired here in the US. I remember getting the Dinky Toys first and then the paperbacks. But unless you were CONNECTED to a sf source or in a fan club it was pretty hard to get those other items from the show. I only managed to get the Japanese as well as French publications in the 1980's due to the club I was running at the time. Those Bandai/Imai kits I got, as well as the Lark resin kits I picked up at sf shows. Anyone else have collecting experiences to share? JIM |
I was able to get only the paperback when UFO was out. Most other items I
got from the club that you [Jim] ran. Lately eBay has been the source, however I haven't gotten anything lately. It was quite a surprise because I was looking around in a small mom and pop store which was down a side street away from the main shopping district. I saw two kits made by Imai...The SHADO Mobile and Sky 1. I also found some T-Bird kits and others. Most of the Anderson resin kits I obtained were through my on base Model Club called The Shoguns. Whenever one of the members would travel to mainland Japan, they would take a shopping list with other members * wants *....Quite a good arrangement since many of us were always taking hops all over the far east area. I have the thermos already, and won't let another fan be deprived.
If I have something, I won't bid on it either. Matter of fact, I haven't even bid on any GA stuff in quite a while. Anyone else have collecting experiences to share? Yes, I can vouch for the fact if you were a fan of UFO, you were a fan in the wilderness. I never realised that I was living in one of the cities that helped get UFO to its number one spot for many weeks. Despite living in a densely-populated place, I never met another UFO fanatic until I joined fab-UFO in 1997. It's amazing to find we've been here all the time scattered about the globe. So, I was too shy to buy the UFO lunchbox and thermos in 1973. Mind you, I went to the Garden Centre a few times to gape at them. That was the only place where I saw the lunchboxes for sale. My mother would have had a fit if I had brought one home. She certainly was not a fan of Straker. She had no taste. However, once I knew the show was to be no more and I was pretty upset about it, let me tell you, I did have a happy UFO experience. I was escorting my Swedish pen-friend and her family to view the sights of Los Angeles (you had to fan away the smog, no, only joking...just) and part of their tour was a stop at Farmer's Market on Fairfax Avenue. Lo and behold, just as we were leaving, I let out a loud squeak. My pen- friend's father came over to see what I was fretting about. As soon as I pointed (I couldn't say much), he quickly bought me a GAF viewmaster and the UFO reels. No questions asked, he just took them over to the counter and paid for them. What a nice man. I still have the viewmaster and the reels. They came over the Atlantic with me when I arrived in Scotland in 1979 so they are about as widely-travelled as I am. During my time when I was in the UFO desert (1973 - 1997), I did manage to acquire my UFO annual. It was in 1983 and I was not working at the time. It was a feat of engineering to get Gary to part with the 8 pounds to pay for it!!!;-) Yes, happy memories during the Dark Time;-) -- Suzanne Sutherland aka drdougjackson |
