Hi Folks,
Can anyone tell me what "Bloodymindedness" means? Commander Straker used it once when he was talking about why the Aliens will be defeated. I've heard the word used in other British programming, ("Yes, Prime Minister", I think) but I never quite understood what it means and how it's used. It did seem odd that Straker (the American) would be the one to use that word. Thanks! It means: pigheadedness, stubborn, doggedness, tenacity, obstinate etc. etc.

used it once when he was talking about why the Aliens will be defeated. I never quite understood what it means and how it's used. It did seem odd that Straker (the American) would be the one to use that word. My dictionary defines it as "deliberately obstructive and unhelpful" It's therefore relevant in the context of warring enemies! It's given as an informal British adjective. However, Straker's character is more "British" than most British (IMHO). It's the next bit of dialogue that always gets me - "it built this planet". More like destroys it! > Stubbornness that's spent the last three years working out and taking steroids, frequently attached to a certain ruthlessness. You mean "brute" [g]. Sarah |

I would say that "bloodymindedness" is another way of saying "being stubborn" or "obstinate". In other situations it could also be seen as awkwardness. In the context of UFO it could refer to Cmmdr Straker's and General Henderson's attitude to each other, or Straker's determination not to let the aliens win in this secret war.
