Hi All!
(Note: it's possible that I am not able to read the messages in the next week, I'm not sure about this. So don't worry if I am not replying yet.) I watched the episode and found some small things.... Well, I fear I'll become the Master of the nit-pickers... 8- Nevermind! IMO this is a well done episode with a rather weak plot. Let's see: * Teresa gave very good informations about the space wrecks (see message # 2887 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/message/2887 )! And yes, why not force the space junks to alter course so that they must burn up in Earth atmosphere instead of blowing them into dangerous smithereens? * First we see the alien object when the spaceship is passing the Apollo 8 stage. In the next scene (when the title moves in) the object is in the same position - but upside down! * Ed Straker with sunglasses and this dark blue suit - way cool!! 8-)) I wonder how many times our Bishop gals have kerplopped in this case? ;-) * Small note: in this episode the ep title is shown AFTER the casting titles - and not in the usual way, too. * I always wondered why are there these conflicts between Henderson and Straker? In CONFETTI CHECK A-OK Henderson seems to support and patronize Straker's career but in the other eps he's very harsh to Straker, more like a bulldog. For example: Henderson says in CONFLICT: "I am prove to the comission that your Organisation in its present form is an expensive and unworkable luxury!" (Maybe Straker becomes too demanding over the years?) 8- * When Straker says to Henderson "I have my report!" I always got the impression by the look in Hendersons face that the General wants to start singing: "So take this report and shove it..." :-) Instead he seems to practice self-control and just says: "Your report..." Don't believe it? Just look at his face! * When Straker is seen on the monitor at Moonbase he looks into the center of the monitor, talking to Foster who is sitting in the front of it. Then Straker looks to the top left where Freeman is. Sorry, but that's nonsense. It's like you are sitting in front of a TV set and when a person is shown in the top right on the screen you will never move your head to look up in the top right, because you wouldn't watch the screen any more, instead you would look to the top right of your room. So Straker is not able to watch Freeman by looking this way. ("Yeah, but maybe he has a second monitor in his office just for this ep?" - "Oh shut up, you know-all..." :-) * The re-entry angle is 6.58 degrees. So we were told by Maddox. But the display he's looking at shows no decimal degrees, the pointer stands somewhere between 6 and 7 degrees. So is this 6.58 degrees only a guess? (For me it looks more like 6.67 degrees ;-)) Anyway, isn't that kind of display too inexact for such an important information? * During the forced re-entry of the Lunar Module in the Earth atmosphere one can see the hair of Maddox` co-pilot flattering. They shouldn't set the air conditioning too powerful ;-) * The Lunar Module didn't burn up in Earth` atmosphere, it exploded! Is this possible? * We see Skydiver under water moving from the right to the left. Two questions to this scene: what are these black things which are rising in front of the U-boat? And where do the airbubbles on the left come from? Hey, is Skydiver diving in an aquarium? :-)) * Colonel Foster knows the meaning of "Washington Square"; Colonel Freeman not. No wonder. Foster is new to SHADO and therefore has learned all codes recently. Freeman learnt it ten years ago :-) * In the Module you can see a huge display wall in front of the pilots an no windows at all; but outside you can see cockpit windows on the ship. What are they for? (That's what I call nit-picking, guys! }:-) * Three Interceptors for four space wrecks. Hm, one of the Interceptor missiles has to hit two space wrecks at the same time... * The UFO is far away in space and SHADO is able to know the target area at this point. They must have hired a clairvoyant :-) * BTW I'm missing SID in this ep. Is he on a vacation? :-)) * I never understood the plot at this point: the complete shutdown of SHADO HQ; Miss Ealand looking out for Sky 1; the satellite which is a decoy to draw the Interceptors from Moonbase... (Hey, alien folks: how about an attack with six or more UFOs? After all Moonbase only owns just three Interceptors, carrying one missile each ;-) How said Henderson: "I don't buy it, Straker!" I don't, too. * Some remarks to the german episode titles: they are not so subtle as the english ones. CONFLICT reads in Germany FALLE IM WELTRAUM (that means "Trap in Space"), IDENTIFIED is DER ERSTE ALARM (= "The first alert"), EXPOSED is TESTPILOT PAUL FOSTER and THE COMPUTER AFFAIR is COMPUTER LUEGEN NICHT (= "Computers don't lie"). They always treated us like children.... :-( Have fun and take care!!! CU Christian |

Christian -- another great set of comments!
You wrote: >* I never understood the plot at this point: the complete shutdown of >SHADO HQ; Miss Ealand looking out for Sky 1; You're the 2nd person to mention being confused by the ending of this episode. This leaves me to wonder -- is your copy of CONFLICT uncut? The shutdown of SHADO HQ is explained by Straker in the episode -- he assumes that the Aliens are using SHADO's radio frequencies to get a precise estimate of where the underground base is. Since SHADO HQ is now unable to know what's going on with the UFO and Sky One, Miss Ealand looks out of the window until Sky One flies directly overhead. At this point, it's now safe to turn everything back on, because they have Sky One for defense. Is this how other people interpret the ending? -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

There must be an edited version floating around as several people have had the same complaint. Great point about the LM windows Christian. I wondered about that myself. Minor point regarding nomenclature: Moonbase and HQ refer to "Earth Orbit Insertion" (EOI) during the LM flights. But as for as I could see, the lunar modules did not go into orbit following their transearth flight, but rather they entered the Earth's atmosphere directly. ttfn Teresa |

The issues that lead to the friction between Straker and Henderson could be a good plot for the fan fiction writers in SHADO groups. Ron |

Of course my copy is uncut and I know all this, but when a UFO is entering the atmosphere Sky 1 always gets into the attack no matter where the UFO is heading for (especially in this case where they know the target when the UFO is far away in space and therefore Sky 1 has plenty of time to get to the right aera :-) Hmm, thinking of it maybe Straker prevents with this kind of action that the UFO could transmit the exact co-ordinates to the homeworld of the aliens for their next attack (if this one fails - as it did :-) That seems more likely to me. I never thought it this way... Thanks, Marc! :-) CU Christian BTW what's the next ep on your list, Marc? |

Woo hoo! and after that "The Dalotek Affair" two of my favorites. And I have a copy of each. Hopefully I can rustle up a copy of "A Question of Priorities" by the time the discussion rolls 'round |

I am glad to hear that :-) Oh, and don't dare to swap your children! That's not ethical, you know. And don't forget if you'd dare... how about all the english episodes of UFO and some dubbed ones? Or all the german dubbed eps and some documentaries? For both children? Last offer... ;-)) No, of course I'm only joking ;-) Best wishes to you and your children, Simon! CU Christian |
