Carlton UFO DVD Box 2 Extra Materials

Hi all,

Although the extra features for Carlton's upcoming UFO DVD box
set #2 have not yet been officially announced, consultant Chris
Bentley has given me an indication of the stuff that might
be on these discs. No guarantees, but these discs MAY include
some or all of the following:

- Ed Bishop commentary track on SUB-SMASH
- more never before seen stills
- merchandise gallery: novels, jigsaws, Super8 home movies,
bubble gum cards, Countdown and TV Action covers, sweet cigarette cards,
and original ITC publicity materials such as the various promotional
brochures, show and story information brochures, leaflets and so on.
- short article about Doppelganger which highlights the crossovers
between the film and UFO and pointing out some of the costumes,
props, music and visual effects footage that transferred from the film to
UFO
- biographies for nine members of the main cast and supplied information
about the series' directors
- Mike Trim's pre-production artwork. In addition, Mike has provided
three visual effects storyboard frames from 'The Cat With Ten Lives'

As for the American UFO DVD releases, there is still no official information
about what will be included, although I'm glad to see that their upcoming
Captain Scarlet DVD box has a whole bunch of extra features -- it looks
like they may in fact have everything that the UK sets had, which would
be a first for A&E. I've been exchanging e-mails with A&E's consultant
about UFO, but so far it's not clear to me what they're going to do.
It's also possible that better-than-expected sales of A&E's UFO DVD Box 1
may encourage them to do more elaborate extras for UFO Box 2. (and yes,
I'm referring to new extras not found on the Carlton DVDs)
Stay tuned...

Glad to hear that you are giving input on the DVD set, Marc. I have the
SCARLET box on pre-order and cannot wait for UFO. By the way, why haven't
A&E had some of the features that the Carlton discs had on previous
releases? Is it a problem with licensing issues?

That's where I pre-ordered it from! I've used Deep Discount since they
started up and have always been really pleased with their prices and
service. Especially the A&E Gerry Anderson releases, which they have for
about 40 to 45% off.

Sorry for the unabashed plug there.

Well, it's difficult to say, really... there seems to be some squabbling
going on between A&E and Carlton, so there's a bit of a "he said",
"she said" going on. My feeling is that A&E just doesn't care as
much about these Gerry Anderson releases as Carlton does, as they
realize that Gerry Anderson shows are not well known in the USA,
and thus are not expected to sell well. Also, I think they figure
that fans will purchase these DVDs whether there are lots of extras
or not, so why bother spending thousands of extra dollars if it's
not going to sell any more discs?

Now, in A&E's defense, they claim that they've requested the
extra materials from Carlton, but Carlton never sends it to
them. So really it's anyone guess as to what's going on here.
Hopefully, they've fixed the problem (although last I heard,
they still hadn't received the UFO extras from Carlton yet)

But here's the list of extras on the A&E Captain Scarlet DVDs,
which seem to be more than usual for them:

Remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound; Commentary
by Creator Gerry Anderson on 2 complete episodes; Gerry Anderson
Biography and Filmography; Character Biographies; Vehicle Guides;
Extensive Galleries of Photos and Production Stills; Introduction
to Captain Scarlet; Spectrum ID Cards; DVD-ROM Interactive Vehicle
Diagrams; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection.

I believe UK Captain Scarlet DVDs gave you a choice between the
original mono soundtrack and a new surround soundtrack. The A&E
description doesn't indicate the original mono soundtrack, which
to me would be a fairly major omission.
