Chris Drake book

It's probably been discussed to death on this list, but today I
checked out of the library a copy of the Chris Drake book, UFO Space
1999. As the title indicates, the book (published in '94) is an
account of the series UFO and Space 1999. First off, I have to state
that I was shocked, mortified and chagrined to discover that there
was not a single shirtless shot of Col. Paul Foster in this tome.
Not even a small one! The author seems not to care about the
sensibilities of a particularly vocal group of UFO fans. I must drop
him a note to complain. Apart from that ghastly lacuna, however, the
book does contain some very good and beautifully printed photos,
including a full page color one of Gabrielle Drake removing her
uniform in the changing room in that episode that was being discussed
onlist recently (the one with some chap in the adjoining room
chatting her up). A funny thing about Gay's character Gay Ellis--in
the entry about her, there's a photo with a caption about how
efficient and professional Lieut. Ellis is--but in the photo, it
looks as if she's about to burst into tears!

Amongst the other photos, I was struck by a beautiful one of Gay with
Alec Freeman on Earth from the Computer Affair (an episode I haven't
seen), a GORGEOUS shot of Lieut. Nina Barry in Moonbase regalia, AND
a funny photo of Commander Straker having his warpaint applied by a
friendly makeup artist.

In the caption goofs dept., there is another photo which appears to
be Paul about to pass out in a particularly harrowing moment in
Ordeal--the caption states that the man in the photo is an Alien!

If folks are interested, I can write more about the book. Despite
the lack of shirtless Paul, it's one I would like to own for my UFO
library. I haven't investigated the episode guide yet. A peculiar
feature of the character bios is that they give birthdates for each
character--in some cases month, day and year! Rather ungallant for
the ladies--they make glamorous Col. Lake out to be 39 at the time of
the series! It least they didn't go whole hog and have her "frankly
40"!

Best,

Steve

Hey Steve - what date do they give for Straker? I just wrote a short story
depicting him as a Scorpio. It may be on the SHADO Library right now.

Ciao for now - Pam

Wanda Ventham guest starred on last night's episode of "Men behaving
badly" on BBC America. Older, gained some weight but still a hottie.

Wanda Ventham 39 in 1969 or 1970?! That doesn't sound right. That
would have her born in 1930. The earliest date I have for her birthday is
1938 and the youngest 1942. That would have her between 28 and 31 years old
when UFO was made and this sounds more correct.
The problem could be that in her early career Wanda might have said
she was older that her actual age to get cast in a role where the were only
looking for a more mature actress and now Chris Drake has found that wrong
age and thinks it is right.
Anyone else got any ideas?

Hello Steve,

When is Col. Lake's birthday supposed to be according to Chris Drake? I
have heard about this book but have never clapped paws on it yet.

And what's wrong with Col. Lake being 39 at the time? She was in her
prime!!;-)

There is nothing wrong with Col. Lake being 39. It is just that I don' t
think that was the age of the character or the actress. I' ve seen many
women in their 30's, 40's, 50's and older who are far sexier than all the
20's and under ones who the entertainment industry try to make the next icon
of.
