I was in high school in early 70's when this show was on - did
everyone smoke? The first thing that struck me after watching all the DVD episodes was that in every episode smoking was epidemic. We should have a contest to count how many times Straker/Freeman "lit up" in a particular episode. |
One of my favorite moments was when the doctor (Schroeder I believe)
offers cigarettes to shado members. I remember thinking that was odd years ago. Between the alcohol consumption and the cigarettes, shado was a medical disaster! BTW, we intentionally asked a question on heavy smoke in UFO to George
Sewell during the interview we filmed a couple of weeks ago. I was not attending the interview and do not know George's exact wording, but he confirmed that his character was *meant* to be a smoker so he *had* to smoke. Yes, that was "Computer Affair", I always get a chuckle out of that scene with the wafts of smoke filling the room, almost like Shroeder and Bradley are trying to out-draw each other. I think a few coughs inserted into the script would have been appropriate here. Obviously Shroeder is a Doctor of Psychology rather than a Doctor of Medicine. Ed Straker smokes but does not drink, Alec Freeman drinks, smokes and drinks, are there any members of SHADO who drink only? I think Henderson would be a big drinker, but if he has a bar in his office, it would probably be concealed to hide it from Alec Freeman. The almost constant bad mood of Henderson could be caused by a permanent hangover. Oddly there is no cigarette dispenser or bar in the SHADO computer room, or on Moonbase, so it looks like it's up to those higher up to get plastered. Just as well "The Long Sleep" was the last episode, would Ed Straker be expected to graduate to pot, then you could have "Mindbender II". Kevin. |

Of course smoking WAS much more common back then, but a few decades ago, smoking in films and TV series was a sort of badge of style and sophistication; film-makers used it to embody their characters with an aura of manly cool. Even the Thunderbird puppets liked the occasional ciggie. If I remember correctly, Gerry Anderson considered having the cigarettes digitally removed from the remastered Thunderbirds DVD release, but the cost was found to be prohibitively expensive. |

How about Straker smoking, lying down with the ashtray
on his chest during "CONFLICT?" Yow!! Good thing he didn't fall asleep. I also recall being struck by the oddness watching one of my favorite films, "IT, THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE" nearly the entire crew smoking inside a metal rocket spaceship while playing chess. ===== Click to subscribe to Don_Ellis __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The heavy smoking and drinking on the part of SHADO personnel was carefully
strategy to prevent them from becoming alien organ transplant donors. I also suspect that if we ever got a good look at the contents of those American, Russian, Chinese and etc. meal from the dispense on Moonbase they would be very high in fat and MSG. James K.
