Yes Brian Flawed ,but somehow acceptable.I mean at first the story just flows.Only after you,ve seen it and had time to dwell on things do you think ...hang on a minute.

Unlike one episode that will remain unspoken of until its appropriate.
I had the UFO View-Master as well.It was the very first thing I bought with money I,d actually earned.
Unlike you however mine just disappeared.Goodness knows what happened to it.

All the best

I am tempted to think that SHADO did get a picture of the alien
homeworld. In my UFO stories at
http://www.buckrogers.demon.co.uk/ufo/ufo.htm
I describe / explain the "Close Up" events thus:-

We had launched one FTL craft before the Arden landings changed
everything. Ever since the UFO crash at Roswell in New Mexico in
1947, Area 51 in Nevada has collected what UFO wreckage it could, and
tried to study it. Of one wreck, the drive block survived in a
damaged and doubtful condition, and attempts to look inside it safely
proved vain. Finally they declared it unsafe and had to get rid of
it. By then SHADO had started, and the Astrophysical Space Commission
told us about it, so we had a small unmanned probe built around it,
rather than merely take it into space and blow it up. The probe was
launched, and tailgated a UFO's FTL travelling field to an alien
world, recorded what it could, returned, and signalled to us.
Thankfully its drive had held out that long. It showed a stark world
of rocky barren mountain ranges and dry air and thin clouds, little
or no open water, and what may have been patches of vegetation and
habitation in damp hollows and flat areas; it seemed to have a large
moon. The probe's ranging equipment had failed, so it could have been
looking at a moon, or an asteroid or stone close up, and there is the
risk that the aliens had detected it and fed it false information;
but later the pictures proved to be genuine.

I really enjoyed your post and like your theory about the FTL that
became SHADO's Follow-The-Leader craft. I enjoyed the episode CLOSE-UP
way back when and will have to take another look. When I got SET 2, I
couldn't resist seeing my favorites (SUBSMASH, TIMELASH, and MIND
BENDER).

I think they got the right girl for the job, but then I am partial to
Lt. Ellis. I'll have to watch the episode later tonight or tomorrow...

BTW, does anyone remember that CLOSE UP was the episode used for the
View Master reels?

yes, I have a copy of the Viewmaster UFO set. If you can't see the real Lt.
Ellis these 3-d versions is the next best thing till they come out with full
size Holograms<g>.

As I've said in a previous post, I have the View-Master too. I was a
View-Master fiend when I was younger and after catching the episode in an
Asheville, NC hotel room when my mom, brother and I were on the way to visit
relatives, I was so kicked to see that it was the same episode (of course,
when I watched the show, all that really made an impression was the
modelwork).
