Cut autograph cards

Clare Cross
This post was updated on .
I'll admit to being fascinated by the 'cut' autograph cards from Unstoppable.

it seems that many of them were cut from the earlier Cards Inc./Carlton cards.  However, where on earth did they get all the autographs of Ed, Mike etc...  And how on earth (or off it!) could it had been financially viable if they had to buy them?

Well, the autographs of all the deceased people must have been purchased from existing autographs.  I'm not sure those went into the normal trading card packs, or were sold to dealers directly at a higher price?

It seems from the advertising that the Cards Inc. autograph cards were quite highly priced.  Beats me how they were purchased by the public.  I can only assume that Unstoppable MUST have bought the lot in bulk as I can't see how else they could have either got hold of a sufficient number or been able to afford them.

I have just bought a load of the Cards Inc. cards (the 100 card basic set and 4 promos) and from information on the wrappers it would seem that you had a 1 in 12 chance of getting one of the 7 (or 9) autograph cards, which now leads me to believe that they WERE inserted into the packets and you'd have to buy at least 12 to stand any chance of getting one - which would make the entire set very difficult and expensive to buy.

On balance I am tempted to say that I prefer the Cards Inc. to the Unstoppable cards as the former have a more interesting and original design, with a colour primary image and a monochrome secondary image on the front and more (mainly monochrome) secondary images on the backs.

Card number 4:0022 is of particular interest as it seems to have a secondary image on the front of actress Edwina Carroll having the angle of her head positioned by someone for the close up shot of Leila Carlin screaming to camera.  I'm not sure if I've seen that shot before.  Probably have.

And who the hell was 'Stuart Myers'?  Some 'chancer' who got lucky, I suppose.  Now that's a card that I bet no-one wanted to find inside their packet!!!!!

P.S.  Dare I say this, but I think some (most) of the sketch/artwork cards in the Unstoppable set are horrendous!  Most of them look like they've been drawn by children!  Really awful.  I wouldn't want one of those either!

S'truth! They're truly dreadful...

The only UFO card set I possess are the original set I collected as a kid.

Thanks for sharing, anyway :)

Hi Clare,

I hope you don't mind me sharing my understanding (knowledge?) of the situation regarding the Cards Inc. autograph cards from 2004. I am not saying my info is absolutely 100% correct, but it may be accurate enough to clarify a few things.

First off, I'm not sure where the number of autograph cards they released (12) came from.  Did the packs make reference to 12 auto  cards? From a photo of promo materials provided by Branko Vekic on Marc's UFO homepage, there were only supposed to be 9 autograph cards, including:

Ed Bishop (Ed Straker)
Gerry Anderson (Producer)
Bob Bell (Art Director)
Michael Billington (Paul Foster)
Shane Rimmer (Bill Johnson)
Jeremy Wilkin (Gordon Maxwell)
Stuart Myres (Alien)
Wanda Ventham (Virginia Lake)
Mike Trim (Designer & Model Maker)

Here's a link to the promo:

http://ufoseries.com/cards/cardsIncAd.jpg

Here also is a checklist of the UFO cards from Jeff Allender:

http://www.nslists.com/ufo2004.htm

The Mike Trim card was originally only available with the Cards Inc. UFO Binder. Of the 9 autograph cards, I've never seen a Bob Bell card, and only recently seen a Jeremy Wilkin card someone on one of the UFO Facebook pages posted recently. The impression I got was that the Wilkin cards never came in any of the packs, and only recently surfaced.

As for the Stuart Myres Alien autograph card, I don't recall all of the details, or how or why Mr. Myres was approached to sign the cards. But I do remember the story that long after the fact he admitted he was never in the show. The actor in the alien suit on the card (Gito Santana) had at one time started a lawsuit against Cards Inc because someone else had signed the cards with his likeness on them. Never heard about the final outcome, though.

And last but not least, the UFO costume cards (was it 2 or 3 different ones? [don't have mine handy]) from San Diego Comic Con were admitted to be fakes by Cards Inc. None of the material swatches were "show worn" as originally claimed.

Hope this helps, and if anyone has more to add or corrections to be made to my info, that would be great!

Jeff

Please forgive my confusion, but I'm not understanding this statement:

Unstoppable bought what lot in bulk? It sounds like you are inferring there is some correlation between the Cards Inc. auto cards and the Unstoppable auto cards.

Thanks for any clarification!  :)

The third one looks just like a model kit I had as a kid... it did say "UFO" on the box, but it of course had no connection to *our* UFO.  It also glowed in the dark.

I found a web page for it (as apparently there is a web page for everything):

Re: Cut autograph cards

SHADO:

To clarify...

On the foil packets of the Cards Inc. cards it states that there 7 autograph cards.  However on the advertising it shows 9.

On the same advert it gives individual prices for autograph cards - Ed Bishop £50, Gerry Anderson £50, Bob Bell £20, etc...  I'm not quite sure WHY these are advertised in this way unless they were to be bought individually.  I'll admit to being confused by this!

If you look closely at the 'cut autograph cards' from Unstoppable, it is clear that many (most) of the autographs have been cut from the Cards Inc. cards.  There are loads on ebay that you can zoom in quite close to (the background gives it away).  Therefore I surmise that Unstoppable must have purchased a lot of these which leads me to conclude that they must have bought a bulk purchase of unsold Cards Inc. autograph cards.  Not all were cut from Cards Inc. cards, but it seems like a vast number were.

The fabric cards are a disgrace - but was anyone really likely to get hold of an original costume and cut it up?  The material doesn't even begin to match that in the photo either!

Hope this makes it a bit clearer.

Clare,

Many thanks for the explanation!  Makes complete sense now. I haven't followed the release of the Unstoppable cards very closely at all,
hence my confusion. Thanks again.

Re: Cut autograph cards

Clare Cross
SHADO : A-OK.

Marc : thanks for the explanation re the bizarre green space ship!  So, neither the 'artist' nor the company producing the cards realised that this kit had absolutely nothing to do with UFO?  Ridiculous.  Most of the sketches are appalling - although there are a few (Graham Bleathman's for example) that are OK.  The vast majority look like they were either drawn by kids or people with absolutely zero artistic skills or training.  Such a shame as I'd be very unhappy to have bought a pack or two and found some of these inside!  Here are a few more of my 'favourites'...
