Hi all;
Heres a DVD question. I just upgraded my system- [1.4 Athlon], anyways I have three hard drives and a hard drive selector called a TRIOS. I installed my DVD drive [NEC 16x]. I'm running XP Pro, Win98 Se, and Win95 OSR2. The hard drives are seperate and I can only boot into one at a time. Question; I have PowerDVD and WinDVD. If I select the region code for the region 1 [I believe region 1 is for UK] in one O/S and select region 2 as another region in a different O/S. Will this work? I'd be happy playing the Carlton DVD's [I've pre-ordered] on just my PC. But would like to play US encoded ones also. Example: Hard drive 1 running XP- region code selected 1 Hard drive 2 running Win98 Se- region code selected 2 Thanks; Steve Christensen |

It's the DVD-ROM drive that is important. The DVD drive I've got, a Hitachi GD-7500, can only have the region-code changed on it up to 4 times before it locks on the last-run region code, depending on whatever disk is run last. I believe you can test your DVD drive by running a utility called 'DriveInfo' (version 2.1) and it will show if your DVD drive has this problem or not. Some (usually older) DVD-ROM drives don't check region codes. My understanding is that WinDVD will play both PAL and NTSC discs, so this shouldn't be a problem. I've downloaded a couple of utilities which, theoretically, will fool my DVD-ROM drive into not keeping track of region codes (hopefully I'm not speaking out of turn here). I haven't tried this yet, but I'm hoping to get a Region-2 PAL Laurel and Hardy DVD in the next day or two, to test with. If this all works out, I won't bother going for a separate standalone DVD player, but will just stick with my PC. Maybe. Anyway, it's something I've been wanting to try out for over a year. And I've wanted a copy of 'The Music Box' as well. Oh, I'm running ME, so I can't speak as to how XP handles the Region codes, but that wouldn't appear to be a problem for you, especially if you stick with region 1. Some people had commented that they had to do complete OS reinstallations when doing region code changes. Maybe I'll know a bit more in a few days. |

After all, I believe that both SPACE PRECINCT and CAPTAIN SCARLET were advertised as being region 2 discs, but in reality turned out to be code-free, thus playable on any computer DVD-ROM. Unless I'm mistaken... (I don't own either of these titles) Marc |
