Just found the Inteceptor/UFO on eBay, 'Buy it Now' for 34.99. Needless to say...immediate launch! Whoopeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! |
Was the seller listing more than one? How about telling us his seller ID so we can get in on it? Jeff Brinke <[hidden email]> wrote: Just found the Inteceptor/UFO on eBay, 'Buy it Now' for 34.99. Needless to say...immediate launch! Whoopeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! |

Nice score. Congrats! : ) Thanks for the link. Too bad he's not selling any more. Never seen one that cheap before. Probably never will again! What a deal, that's quite a few dollars below wholesale cost.

I still feel fortunate that I kept mine from when I was younger, and still have all 3 in good nick. Likewise Straker's car, too. As for the SHADO Mobile Unit 2, though, it got played-with to death. ~Jordan --- Jeffrey Nelson <[hidden email]> wrote: > > > Nice score. Hi Jordan, I have zero experience with any of the older UFO diecast. I'm curious as to what you have. I've seen Dinky Interceptors & Mobiles on Ebay. But who made Straker's car? Have you taken a look at the new UFO diecasts made by Product Enterprises? Probably not worth as much as some of the old Dinky stuff, but they are certainly more accurate in appearance. Also, does anyone know if PE is planning on making any other vehicles from UFO? Can't wait til my Skydiver arrives. The Battlestar Galactica figures from Joyride look nice (and cheap) too. It's like I'm a little kid again at the age of forty-six! : ) Jeff Jordan Moller <[hidden email]> wrote: I still feel fortunate that I kept mine from when I was younger, and still have all 3 in good nick. Until about a year ago, I had no idea that UFO toys had ever been made. I'm assuming they were mostly available in the UK, as I had never seen them before, here in the US. So I thought I'd check them out on Ebay. I realize that ones such as the Dinky Interceptor were meant to be 'toys', not collectible diecast. But when I first saw them on Ebay, I made the immediate decision to not even bother getting one. For a person that may have had one as a kid, I can fully understand the allure of replacing one from childhood. But appearance wise, these things are atrocious, IMO. The general shape isn't too bad, but I have to echo your thoughts Brinke, in regards to color choices. What WERE they thinking? I would have thought they would have been able to sell many more of them by making the colors a bit more accurate. Even as a kid, I would have turned my nose up at a green & orange Interceptor. The shade of green on the Dinky Mobile 2, while not accurate, is at least tolerable. The odd thing is that the fuselage on all three is *green*, of all things, with the landing gear orange, and on at least one of the cockpit canopies of the three, it is blue/clear plastic, instead of clear, like the others. When I find them, I'll take pix of the 3 together, a close-up of one, and one of Straker's car. Fortunately, I resisted the very strong urge over the years to paint them to the proper colours, as I did once for a Space:1999 Eagle (well, it looked better that way), so, despite them all being very much played with, they are still in remarkable condition (and I never once lost any of those nose-missles that shoot, and go "bang" with a paper/gunpowder cap, like they made when I was young...*smile*) :-) ~Jordan |

Sacriledge, I know... I also thought it strange that if the Captain Scarlet Armored saloon put out by the same company was painted its proper white, why didn't they do that for the Interceptors? Re: Ed Bishop as Capt. Blue: I thought they did a remarkable job making the marionette look just like him, when I later saw the UFO series for the first time, and could compare. Pondering, ~Jordan |

I've only ever seen the SkyDiver sub/interceptor as a model kit. I only ever saw diecast Interceptors, Straker's Car, and the Mobile Unit 2. Of plastic models, SkyDiver and the Hawk, which was VERY rare, and at the time sold as a Space:1999 toy, since it appeared in that one "Space" episode. Another interesting thing is that the Eagle One diecast had the same green for the body and transport pod and orange landing gear as the UFO Interceptors. Methinks somebody at the toy factory got a good deal that year on green paint and orange plastic. ~Jordan |

I just want to say that it is great that there are other kids in thier 40's who love UFO. I wish I had know all of you existed when I was a younger kid. I think that not only does it keep us busy but it also gives us a great imagination to pass on to our kids and younger relatives. My niece thinks I am cool because we see eye to eye on cool things.

I for one would really like to see pics of them. : ) Even though they would have looked better repainted, think how it would have ruined the collectors value. You'd still be kicking yourself. : ) But that just reinforces the point about them not being made in the correct colors in the first place. Who was the goof that picked the colors in the first place? I guess it's relatively rare to find one with the original missle, yet you've got three! I was extremely anal about my toys as a kid, too. Took really good care of them, and never lost any accessories/loose parts. And I was the only one to have a whole collection of redline Hot Wheels with mint condition paint jobs. In fact, I was so fussy, it used to drive the other kids nuts. Did Dinky manufacture the Strakermobile too? I'm 46 myself...a lot of us here seem to be of roughly the same vintage. When I was working on a show I produced on public access television in the '90's, one of my best cameramen and friends was a Brit fellow about my age, who, when he discovered that I had a collection of UFO vids, bugged me (he didn't have to try too hard) to have us stay up and have a marathon at my place. I like how the show ties us all together, wherever we grew up with it. I wish > I had know all of you existed when I was a younger > kid. Hi I just wanted to add, I have the Dinky Space 1999 Eagle Freighter, and it is the proper colors. This is the eagle that moved the Radioactive waste. Strange they made this one the right colors, and not the regular eagle. That was the subject of my first post to the list a few years ago, and the consensus was that it was thought that the bright colour would appeal more to kids. I bought one myself, but would have much preferred a white one. Perhaps someone in marketing at Dinky thought that the market for it would include a lot of people unfamiliar with UFO, or that it wouldn't really matter to the show's fans. A mistake, I think. |

Dinky made a very conscious decision to paint them green, rather than to reflect the colours of the interceptors as they wre in the programme. Dinky were in the toy business, ie selling as much as possible to the kiddies. Their market research of the day told them that in general, "kids [ie boys] don't buy white toys". So they decided to use a more colourful approach. Simple marketing!
