Doppelganger/JTTFSOTS.

I can't work out when the storyline is based;
the same period as UFO, or mid 21st Century,
as they used the same sets etc.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I just found a web page that says basically
the same thing:

"The movie is supposedly set a century in the future
but this is never stated on screen. The 2069 date is
strongly contradicted by the late-1960s fashions,
computer technology and the Phoenix rocket itself,
which suggest the events take place in the near future.
The Phoenix rocket launch and mission control footage
was later reused in the UFO episode "The Man Who Came
Back", thereby establishing that Doppelganger is in
fact contemporary with the TV series which was set in
1980-1984."

reference to the Movie/Film: Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (?).
And Yes as far as I can tell that "Film" takes place at roughly the
same time as: U.F.O.

Gerry Anderson was a practical, sensible producer who, when he came to
make UFO, re-used props from a film which had been little-seen. It's
not surprising that both productions have many design similarities
(fashion/technology etc.) as they were made at about the same time by
largely the same people.
I frankly doubt that GA gave much thought at the time to any
relationship between the worlds and dates of the two productions as
they were never meant to be compared anyway.

While the precise supposed date of Doppelganger, a stand-alone film,
wouldn't matter a great deal, with UFO there were good practical
reasons for setting a potentially long-running series much closer in
time to the date of production. Many contemporary locations and props
in the world of the late 60's would still look plausibly contemporary
for a series set only a decade or so in the future. If the series had
been set a century in the future then many more expensive sets and
props would have needed to be built, at huge cost.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but I tend to think that any more complex
theories probably have little basis in reality.

John
