Doppleganger running time?

In the book PSYCHOTRONIC ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FILM (by Michael Weldon),
the entry for Journey to the Far Side of the Sun states that "twenty
minutes were cut for the American release." Has anyone every heard of
this before? I have the US DVD and it runs 101 minutes. Is there
really ever a longer or shorter version?

In American releases the scene between Roy Thinnes and Lynn Loring where he
confronts her concerning the birth control pills was removed. I never saw
that scene until I first bought the videotape release a few years back.

It isn't unusual for there to be several different running times for film.
Usually a different running time of a film will have a change of title. In
The UK it was called Doppleganger and this will be the one having the longest
running time as that is the original title of the film. In the States it was
called Journey to the Far Side of the Sun. I guess this was done for the
same reason that the title of Au Pair Girls was changed to The Young
Playmates for U.S. release, they didn't think we were smart enough to know
what a Doppleganger or a Au Pair Girl was<g> and the might have be right.
Anyway according to my reference books here are the running times for
Doppleganger. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Movies list the running
time as 101 minutes. The Science Fictionary by Ed Nada lists the running
time for Journey To the Far Side of the Sun as 94 minutes but he lists the
running time of Doppleganger as 104 minutes. Okay Leonard Maltin's Movie
Video Guide lists Journey To The Far Side of The Sun(I'm calling it JTTFSOTS
after this) as running 99 minutes. So the biggest time difference I can
find is 10 minutes.

There's a scene where Thinnes and Loring argue, and she accuses him of
having become impotent after a space mission, but it wasn't until I saw the
video release that the birth control pills came into it. Frankly, I think
Thinnes has a case against whoever edited the film for defamation of
character.

I'll have to go re-watch the film (always a good excuse) but I think there
were also a few scenes showing Lynn Loring running off on dates with the
EUROSEC press agent she was catting around with (I think "catting around" is
still the acceptable polite term).

Did you get this the wrong way round? :) I've often seen it
referred to as Doppelganger here, but have only ever seen it
presented on UK TV as 'Journey to the ..'

It just occured to me another scene that was cut from the [original]
US theatrical version, that was left in the British version, was the
more graphic element of Herbet Lom getting shot. I know this only
amounts to a few seconds but it all adds up. Dopelganger was a 'A'
certifacte when original released

Just as an aside, I was friends with the son of the local cinema
owner, where I grew up, and after Dopelganger had finished it's run, I
asked and got the two of the posters, the big ones [40" x 30"] "Are
You Two People Looking At This?" I have no need for two, and would be
willing to trade one of them, they are in good condition and have
been stored folded since I aquired them, so if you have anything
interesting let me know, as a modeller I'm partial to new models hint,
hint.

No I got it right. It was original made in England as Doppleganger. But I
find checking my Halliwell's Film Guide which is the major film reference
book in England that they now when you look at Doppleganger tell you to see
Journey To The Far Side of The Sun. So I guess like alot of other things the
U.S. versions of films are taking over from the British one even if they
were shown in England first under their original title. You will see in
anything where Gerry Anderson mentions the film he calls it Doppleganger.

LOL! I'll have to try to find the DVD. I first saw that film long before
I knew anything about UFO and I recall being really impressed by the
whole idea of it and really shaken by the ending ... good film.

Anyone ever had any dealings with a guy named "Massimo" in Milan, Italy?
His ebay name is "Grandenagus". I won a UFO model kit and photograph
from him a little over a week ago, never got a total for both items
shipped even though I emailed him 4 or 5 times. He sent me 3 payment
reminders, all of which I responded to promptly and let him know that if
he could total up both items and the shipping costs for them together I
would paypal him the money immediately. After the last round I totaled
it myself, taking the shipping charge from the heavier item and
Paypalled him the money with simple instructions to please ship them
both together and let me know if what I sent was not enough so I could
send him more. Now I see BOTH items are BACK up for auction! Anyone know
this guy and speak italian well enough to give him grief and tell him
the kind of nasty feedback he is in for if I don't get my items? He took
the money, he needs to ship the goods. This is why I rarely deal with
people overseas in non-English speaking countries... I have nothing
against them, but it always ends up being a pain in the ass.

This is the same guy who was selling "UFO scripts" which were in fact
just printouts from my website. Doesn't sound like a reputable
seller to me...

Actually, I just found out that this Italian dealer is a "she", not a
"he". The buyer of the UFO scripts just e-mailed me to tell me that
Paolo Malaguti informed him that these scripts were just printouts
from my website.
