Dear All,
We wish to let you know that a 10 minutes video of Ed Bishop taking part in the successful Italian show "Anima Mia" back in 1997 is now available on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgeiGR1yyUc Anima Mia was a RAI TV show celebrating the Seventies in Italy. You will also notice that Ed is wearing his original wig, and that he has with him the original Alien's Helmet (both part of the ISOSHADO Collection). Thank you Calimerina for making the video available to all of us! teresa ISOSHADO ----- Original Message ----- From: calimerina calimerina To: [hidden email] Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 8:06 AM Subject: [ISOSHADO] Ed Bishop su YouTube Ed Bishop (il Comandante Straker) ospite di Fabio Fazio nella trasmissione "Anima Mia". Hey that was cool. Wish I had a list of the questions in english. :) It wasall in the costumes wasn't it? He just puts on that outfit and hey presto...Straker! Is this the incident which got him prevented from wearing the wig ever again due to copyright infringement? Or did the show's producers getpermission first before he came on the show "in character?" Just curious.

Not sure at all about that wig incident... It's the first time I hear about
it. If and when I find out anything, I'll let you know. To our knowledge the rights that RAI Television had on UFO expired in 2000, so at that time (1997) they didn't infringe any copyright. Most of the questions by the interviewer (the one on the right of the screen) were *silly* questions, though the man is still a journalist to date. I can quickly write down a list of such questions (not today, though), some of which may be duly understood only by people living in Italy. Actually when I happen to watch that sequence from time to time, I can't but perceive its *silliness* and I feel sad for Ed who could not totally perform at his best, trying to cope with such questions. Anyway I think he made a good Straker also 30 years later, wearing the wig, his watch, and a UFO-style costume which was taylored on purpose by the RAI costumes department (I am told that P Malaguti supplied RAI with the exact costume size...). teresa ISOSHADO ----- Original Message ----- From: zerg harry To: [hidden email] Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 2:43 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Ed Bishop on YouTube Hey that was cool. Back when this show was first aired, I had screen captures of this on my website. However, Ed Bishop thought that he looked stupid as an old man in his Straker outfit/makeup, and asked to have these screen captures removed from my site. I don't recall any problems with copyright infringement... Marc |

Wow, great clip. Thanks for sharing, it was interesting to see. He still looked good in that wig 30 years later!

Yes, indeed.
Please see below a very rough transcript/translation of what is said in the video (as well as silly questions et al.). teresa ----- Original Message ----- > Wow, great clip. Thanks for sharing, it was interesting > to see. He still looked good in that wig 30 years later! > > Jim. > ---------------- When Piccolo Grande Amore (an cult song in Italy) was written, the human race was in the hands of Commander Straker. Ed enters the studio and theres a standing ovation. A Zanotta green cushion/seat is brought to the presenter Mr. Fazio. Ed invites him to sit down (Fazio is then joined on the green chair by singer Claudio Baglioni). Ed and the interviewer Mr. Fede sit on inflatable Zanotta chairs. When Ed tries to bring the attention to the helmet, Fazio asks to be allowed to touch Eds hand. Ed allows him to touch the watch. Then Fazio says that Mr. Fede (the journalist) can interview Commander Straker. Fede asks if the Commander used to watch TG1 (Main RAI channel TV news; Mr. Fede used to be a speaker at TG1 News) during the UFO times. Ed replies that he has never watched TG1 news. Fede insists: cant you watch TG1 on Moon Base? Ed answers affirmative this time. Then Ed is asked if he ever suffered claustrophobia. Ed answers "yes, very very badly. How did you know that?" Fede replies that he has read his history (??) and then he asks Ed if the Commander is a real man or if he is an alien... Then Fedes discussion goes back to claustrophobia to recall that the Commander was always going around in such tiny submarines... Fazio inquires further: how did you get into such tiny submarines? Ed replies: "well, a lot of that is secret! Its a military secret, as SHADO is a very secret organisation. And information on its submarines must be kept confidential. There were also special features which allowed the submarine to take off to the space. But these technical aspects do not have to be revealed to you and have been duly taken care of by our technicians." A new question from Fazio, inquiring on Moon Base personnel wearing purple wigs and on the hairdressers they used to go to. Ed replies telling about the wigs as an antistatic device to prevent damages to the technical equipment. Then Fede asks another silly question: he says he never figured out if the personnel was made up by a number of engineers or were they outnumbered by hairdressers? The presenter Fazio himself has some doubts on the question (he cant get it...). Eventually Ed points out that it was not a matter of hairdressers, but of technicians. Then Fede asks about Interceptors and strikes (a subtle reference is made here to the common Italian airline strikes). Ed replies that they never had a strike in SHADO. Another reference is then made by Fede to cows (referring to the strikes held by the cow breeders in Italy). And Ed asks cows on the moon? That would have to be another secret. Then Fazio asks the Commander if his hairstyle has been inspired by Caterina Caselli (Italian singer who had a similar hairstyle in her early days). Then Ed says hes sorry he doesnt know Ms. Caselli. Fazio asks: your adventures were in 1980: do you know what really happened in 1980? While you were dreaming of SHADO UFO, Moon, Space stations... What happened? Here a discussion starts on events which happened in Italy in 1980. Then Fazio adds: while you were making us dream about space and UFO, Mr. Toto Cutugno has been awarded # 1 at the Sanremo Song Festival. Ed claps bravo. After a short discussion Fazio points at the precious helmet, suggesting that the Commander has captured an Alien. Then another question: Commander, you saw them, please tell us how do aliens look like? Ed finally points at Mr. Fede, confirming that he is the alien. Then Ed stands up to go out of the studio and leaves smiling and waving goodbye. |

While it was enjoyable to see Ed in uniform in the clip, watching it made me feel sorry for him. He seemed uncomfortable with all of the commotion going on around him and the host seemed more interested in listening to himself talk and ask silly questions than actually get the answers. The host (Fazio?) seemed rather amused by himself. If I were an interviewer with eight minutes of Ed Bishop's time, I would hope I could come up with a better interview than that. Perhaps something was lost in the translation. Regardless, it is always a pleasure to see another of Ed's appearances. Thank you! Lorraine |

But I seem to recall that Ed was also unhappy with the way he had been treated at the time by the tv company - I can't recall if he had felt pressured into wearing the wig or was just generally unhappy with the overall tone of the show. He comes over very well when it is obvious that he isn't very comfortable. It can't be easy to cope when you are having to wait for a translation which may or may not be accurate. I was reminded of some of Clive James's interviews (British members will know him) where some of the humour seemed to unkindly come from the non-English speaking 'target' not fully appreciating the tone of the questions or that Clive was being disingenuous in his comments. I recall that the mess-fuss attitude was generally spread in the show.
They used to play the same with Italian guests... Probably for Ed it was all about the overall tone of the show. I think that the interpreter did his best to translate but, as mentioned earlier, it was hard for him to understand the silly questions he had to translate into English. Anyway, despite its overall tone, the show was very successful because it covered many aspects/topics of our lives in Italy when most of us were kids. teresa ----- Original Message ----- He comes over very well when it is obvious that he isn't very comfortable.
