Hi all,
I ran across the following on thedigitalbits.com: -- Over on the Space: 1999 fan site Eagle Transporter.com, there's a posted report on an event from September with Douglas Trumbull, in which he confirmed that the behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey is no longer happening. That we already knew. The more interesting thing however, is that Trumbull indicated that some 17 minutes worth of footage was cut from the film before its theatrical release by director Stanley Kubrick, and that Warner has discovered that footage in their film vaults. Hopefully, at least THAT much will find its way onto Warner's new Blu-ray release, due sometime next year. --- Now, why is this important? It's my understanding that Ed Bishop had some speaking parts in the original cut of 2001, and these scenes were cut prior to the final release. So if this new footage gets released on video, maybe we'll see a "new" Ed Bishop performance! Marc |

Actually, now that I've tried to research what was in those 17 minutes, it appears that none of this may feature Ed Bishop... perhaps his scenes got cut even earlier in the process... :-( Marc |
That is most disappointing. I would have loved to see some newly released footage of Ed Bishop.

I recall reading in a book that there were some "delightful" scenes between Ed Bishop (the pilot of a spacecraft) and the "flight attendants", and someone who had seen an early cut of the film thought it was a mistake for those scenes to have been deleted. (although I guess some of that might actually appear in the movie, but only music can be heard in the final cut -- no dialog) Marc |

I seem to recall Bishop talking about his scenes and the fact that he improvised some dialogue with Floyd...
I thought that it was something to do with his fiancee on the Moon and the rumours of an epidemic. Can anyone confirm that.. or have I got it wrong..Just reading my first edition copy of 2001 (screenplay version)... paperback, has fallen into 5 parts.. brown pages, no spine!!! . need a new copy! And I found the sleeve for the LP as well.. I have been recently downloading kitsch old 'B' movies from the 50's and 60's, as is my poor taste! and came across one I hadn't seen since I was a kid called "Battle Beneath the Earth" - it really is a rubbishy bit of old hokum made in 1967 starring Kerwin Mathews, but I had forgotten it has quite a large part played by one Edward Bishop. It was made to look American, but pretty obviously shot in England. (California never looked so wet and miserable!) Is this the movie where Chinese are tunneling under the US with the use of laser beam drillers? They get to figure out where the Chinese are by making the entire nation go quiet so microphones can pick up the sounds of drilling???

Whats wrong with liking those old things? At least they were fun. These
days every movie is a blockbuster and overhyped and totally lacking in fun. They are all trying to earn an Oscar and make megabucks, rather than just entertain, which is what movies really are all about not massive budgets and gimmicks and overblown stars. For those that ever went to Disneyworld, at what is now called Disney Hollywood Studios, it used to be called Disney-MGM Studios.
One of the sit down restaurants is called Sci Fi Drive-in Diner. Its theme is you are going to a drive in set in the 50's. You sit in cars while you eat and watch trailer after trailer of pure 50's sci fi movies. I don't know if I should be proud of this or not, but not only have I seen every movie they showed, but could name most of the titles :) Hi, my name is Bruce and I like 'B' movies :) ----- Original Message ----- From: David Richards To: [hidden email] Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 2010 11:13 PM Subject: RE: [SHADO] Ed Bishop scenes What's wrong with liking those old things? Hi again.
Ed Bishop was frequently asked about his experience with Stanley Kubrick during the numerous meetings he had with his fans here in Italy. Back in 2000 he was interviewed during a convention in Fiuggi, near Rome and gave his personal view on 2001. A short audio track has just been uploaded in the Files section of the SHADO discussion group (Ed Bishop on Stanley Kubrick.mp3). teresa ISOSHADO ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marc Martin" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 2010 11:52 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Ed Bishop's cut 2001: A Space Odyssey scenes > That is most disappointing. Hi Marc,
Paolo Malaguti confirms that that year 2000 interview was made on purpose for "Canal Jimmy" that asked Ed several questions during the Fiuggi event. ISOSHADO was there and filmed the interview, as agreed with Canal Jimmy. Then that interview was aired by Canal Jimmy when the UFO series was broadcast on tv in 2000-2001 and it was also enclosed in the Italian UFO DVDs later in 2003 (in DVD #5 of the "deluxe" edition of the first set). Hope this answers your question. Happy new year to all from ISOSHADO! teresa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marc Martin" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, December 30, 2010 5:04 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Ed Bishop's cut 2001: A Space Odyssey scenes > Ed Bishop was frequently asked about his experience with Stanley > Kubrick during the numerous meetings he had with his fans here in > Italy. I remember this movie. Always on in the mid afternoon; have not seen it for decades! It is good nonsense and passes 90 or so mins. The silliest bit is when the Americans make a prototype version of the Chinese counterpart but after a few goes it breaks down to which someone says "The Laser has burnt out!" ?

Hi,
yes. I do. The basic DVD quality is rather low, they pulled it from a very bad theatrical copy and apparently quite some nudity and violence was cut from this version. Pets is a sexploitation movie (as close to porn as you can get without it being directly classified as such), one of those which used to run in the drive-in cinema late shows in the late 70ies and early 80ies. Bishop plays a (pathologically relevant) sadist/dominant and art gallery owner who "collects" docile females of the animal and human variety, "taming" them at times himself. It's rather funny in general, quite old-guard sexist, there's some classy acting by Bishop in it, who I must say, did this without any tongue in cheek in sight, thus pulling his role off. And I must say kudos, though I suspect he probably did not really grasp what the basic goal was when he signed that contract. Unless he thought no one would notice. ... ;-) Be cautious who you watch it with though. Some might not react favorably.
