I've been in the habit of watching some episodes recently, and once again athought has occurred to me after all these years. Whenever I see Straker's office descending into SHADO HQ, I notice that the windows and, presumably, the outer wall descends as well.
So . . . if I just happened to be standing outside the building, would I beseeing an entire small section of it (Straker's office) occasionally rising and falling? Michael |
Apparently so. Gerry Anderson addressed that issue in his DVD commentary. If I recall correctly, he said he hadn't thought about it at thetime, lol.

P.S. One way around that would have been having the outer shell stay above ground, with blinds that would automatically drop to cover the windows, right?
And no, I didn't send my previous message twice. Yahoo must be havingissues again. The walls will likely be made up of two layers - one layer (the outer
layer) has all the windows and whatever that you would see from outside, the other one (the inner layer) has all the windows to match the outer layer. When the office descends if they used normal windows depending on how quick the office descends you'd likely see a quick flash of a top of the office disappearing into the floor. However to cover this they'd likely use some technological gizmo (such as those one way windows you can get nowadays, those where you can see out but no one can see in) or some other such device to keep people from seeing the secret. The question is does Straker have someone in his office to push the button and announce the floors - "Basement level 1 - Ladies Lingerie and makeup Basement Level 2 - Household Items, Basement Level 3 - SHADO Secret Headquarters" :-) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Perhaps there's another office that comes up to take the empty space.. a bit like the sofa in Thunderbirds when Alan etc go to TB3?
It was a really silly idea having a lift like that. Wonder what they did when it broke down? It was a pity that we never saw other entrances into Shado. There must havebeen a cargo lift, and a general personnel lift... In Court Martial, when Paul escapes at the end by going through Strakers art behind the desk, he is next seen in a elevator going up, then escaping through a day that is part of the studios.

Yes, and there was the other elevator in 'Timelash' but they were both 'secret' weren't they? Although in Mindbender there are two guards who say that Straker hadn't come in that way presumably through another lift?
But wasn't it only the senior staff who used that 'office'elevator.. or am I getting confused? --- In [hidden email], "Bruce Sherman" <brucesherman@...> wrote: > > In Court Martial, when Paul escapes at the end by going through Strakers art behind the desk, he is next seen in a elevator going up, then escaping through a day that is part of the studios. > > |

Anyone ignoring it would go through to plummet fifty feet or more to a certain death on Straker's office roof. All a bit silly really. What's wrong with a private lift, or God forbid, *stairs!* |
Hi,
I think given that SHADO has the technology to put people regularly on the Moon, operate state-of-the-art technology, A bombs, most advanced computers, SkyDiver, etc. etc... a precision engineering design job on Commander Straker's link would be fairly straight forward. Given that Ed Straker is the CEO of Harlington-Straker Film Studios, AND CIC of SHADO, I would guess that he would have to make the journey between the two very regularly. An office/lift is a great cover, good security without raising any suspicions (Where's Ed Straker? Having a private meeting in his office - who would argue?... (I think the brouhaha over the external view of Straker's office descending is over-blown and easily solved with one-way glass or other simple deception), good use of time and efficiency Also, I know of airtight hermetically sealed lifts working regularly at Intel, the technology is no problem, and that is a far greater engineering challenge. Regards, Griff PS. Of course, if you REALLY want to throw technology at the problem... maybe Straker's office is stationary, and it's everything else that ascends/decends... He is the boss of the world ;) --- In [hidden email], "Rob" <tryptych@...> wrote: > > And how does he explain the gap in the floor between > > his office and Miss Ealand's area? :-) > > > > Marc > > > It might explain why there is a sign saying "Do not enter" over Straker'soffice door. If you realy think abou it. There has to be a seperate entrance for
regular staff. A question would come up as to why are all these people coming into your office but never come out.? Also, if you are doing studio work everyone would be passing thru your office. And what of shift changes? It would be easyer to have people go into an office building or a sound stage and dissapair. There had to have been at lease 50 or more at one time.
