Hi all,

Okay, our 2 weeks for discussing the UFO episode COMPUTER AFFAIR is
almost up (and where are those wonderful observations from Carly?),
so it's time to start thinking about our next UFO episode for
discussion:

FLIGHT PATH (http://ufoseries.com/guide/flightPath.html)

So everybody, start thinking about watching & discussing this episode!

And if anyone's been putting off making comments on COMPUTER AFFAIR,
hurry up! :-)

Hmmmm. So there are two Carlys on this list, are there?

Well this one has nothing insightful to say about Computer Affair.
Especially not after the truly spectacular Christian Extravaganza!

It's a UFO ep... and worthy because of that fact! I guess it was
unusual in it's day for trying to confront racial issues. In a
professional environment in a drama context rather than some
awful 'comedy' show. And especially because it was scheduled as a
children's show, presumably because that's what Mr Anderson had been
making up till that time.

In answer to Fiona (hi Fiona, how're you?) yes, this episode must
have been shown first time around as I didn't see any UFO eps after
their first showing till a couple of years ago and I do remember
Computer Affair from my childhood.

It looks very Thunderbird-ish - well the location stuff in Canada
does.

Injecting the alien with the anodyne (sp?)... on the off chance it'll
instantly render the English language comprehensible to an alien. Bit
of a leap of faith! I'm sure the computer wouldn't have recommended
it as a course of action.

It's a UFO ep so I love it by default... but it's not one of the top
five.

Although... I seem to remember that I persuaded my mother to buy me a
turquoise trouser suit like the one Gay Ellis wears for her trip to
Straker's carpet. God I must've looked a prat!

Not one of my faves either.

ROFL!

I haven't rewatched it yet, so can't comment yet ...

Yeah I had a turquoise suit too. Still have the photographic evidence of me
in Jersey looking a fat little twit! As to Flight path a pretty silly ep
IMHO and I can't say that I found George Cole suited his role. A bit of
miscasting. Ok back to lurkdom.

I think they are hoping that that the Alien already understands
English, but is resisting .. the drug is intended to break down the
Alien's resistance. I like this scene on the whole - it's a bit
sinister .. you inevitably feel sympathy for the Alien, and it's
good that SHADO is shown as having a dark side from time to time.
Makes it a bit more believable and interesting. A bit like The
Long Sleep, where Foster insists on using a possibly lethal drug
on a young woman to improve her memory.

Hi all,

I haven't seen very many comments about our current UFO episode
for discussion -- FLIGHT PATH. Anyone planning on watching
and/or commenting on this episode?

To help fill the void, I found my comments from the original UFO
episode discussions:

-------
This is a fairly blah episode. It moves very slowly, and it has some
of the poorest editing -- there is one scene with Moonbase & SID that
seems completely out of place! The car crashing into the gas station
certainly left an impression -- it's one of the few scenes that I can
actually remember viewing in 1972! And the end sequence with the UFO
coming in at ground level is good too. The ending is bleak as well,
establishing UFO as a series that hardly ever has a happy ending...
This is another one of those episodes that tries to contrast the
"good" Freeman with the "evil" Straker. Straker is really quite
unlikable in this one, and I'm glad that he softens up considerably
in latter episodes. His interrogation with Roper via a TV monitor
always seemed a bit bizarre to me -- why not just do it in person?
(perhaps it seemed more futuristic via TV?)

Yeah, Straker is a bit of a hard case .....

I am, but I'm afraid my copy won't arrive before the end of next week.
:-\ But it should arrive in time for the discussion of the other
episode on the tape (Responsibility seat)

Just acquired "Mindbender" (one of Mike Billington's faves <KERPLOP>),
along with "Long Sleep" and "Timelash". Interesting.

I'm up to 7 episodes now (9 when the next tape arrives). Anyone know
where I can find "Computer Affair" (the very first UFO episode I saw),
"Identified", or "Reflections in the Water"?

I quite like Flight Path, despite its faults but one thing that
does annoy me about it is the way that after SHADO works out that
Moonbase is about to be menaced by a UFO, they send a highly
stressed Roper to sort it out on his own. Surely they would have
sent everybody capable of carrying a missile launcher out there,
with air cover .. er vacuum cover from the Interceptors.

On a more positive note it's nice to see old Arfur Daley/Flash
Harry in a different role. I think he had a bit of a lean time
in the '70s .. not many parts that I can remember.

I think I prefer the 'unlikeable' Straker - the contrast with
the far more personable/human Freeman works very well.
